Help. My 80s whirlpool tub apron is hideous.

What would you do about improving this? replacing the tub is cost prohibitive and I don't see refinishing solving this particular issue.
We're gearing up to retile and trying to decide how to proceed with this ugly front of the tub here. I'm hinking of constructing something to cover it, which is the more extreme option. I would love simple tips on the gaps and the ugly gold metal trim to maybe make refinishing it seem like an option. thanks in advance.
