Identification of this shrub please.

Hello all,

This shrub popped up in my neighbors garden in Southeastern Wisconsin. We are trying to figure out what it is. My best guess from doing some searching is it being a Black Elderberry but the little sub leaves coming off of some of the other leaves stems is throwing me off, never saw anything like that before or in my searches.

The main trunks out of the ground seem to be in groups of three with one group about a foot from the other. Not sure if it's two different plants or maybe it spreads by rhizomes as the one clump is smaller (younger looking) then the other.

Sambucus, Elder. In the bottom left corner of the first picture there are some leaves belonging to something else but I can't see enough to suggest an id. Perhaps you can show us the puzzling 'sub' leaves.

Floral, the subleaves show at the top of the middle photo.

Floral if you are referring to the three lobbed leaves on the plant underneath the one I wanted an ID for that is just a blackberry plant which was just starting to have ripe berries when I was taking the photos so a few may have been eaten in the process. LOL

If you were referring to the ones I mentioned that were throwing me off and I've never seen before then as Babs commented those can be seen in the middle picture.

Hi diffident_one, your post motivated me to propagate elderberry. On July 4th I passed by an exceptional plant and slammed on the brakes. It had huge flower heads of pure white. I'm calling it S. canadensis. This is a good one for beginners to propagate. Treated the cuttings with hormone, put under mist and here they are today.

I have an enormous Sambucus that I rooted in a glass of water. I meant to stick it and never got around to it....
