Is soil boring needed before an addition?

My bungalow in (south) Tampa Fl was built in 1942 and I plan to add a small addition to the kitchen and small addition to an enclosed sun porch; about 380 sq ft total. The house is built up on brick piers with crawl space underneath and the new addition will be the same. Soil boring tests are being recommended. Has anyone else been advised to do this for a small addition and if so what was found? I would have thought that if there was a problem with my soil my house would have had problems before now. Have lived in this house for 22 yrs. Any advice would be appreciated.

Who is recommending the soil bore test? If it’s the city you may not have a choice, if it’s the contractor press further why they feel it’s needed.

The city does not require the test. It is being recommended by the engineer who is being hired by the designer to seal the architectural plans because they say there is a remote history of land in the area having been used as dump sites many years ago. My question is if there has been no problem with soil support for the 22 years we have lived in this house, why would it be a risk or concern now and is the expense of soil boring tests really necessary?

IF one is building the home of homes for the Prince of Paymore, with a bank account to match blue blood, bore away. But if one is building an addition for something that is just the house I live in....get the cable, gas, electric, sewer, water and other buried assets marked first, and than hire someone to help you that is on the same page you are on, common sense balanced with the need-to-know . . .. You might ask neighbors that you know who have done similar alterations, even backyard pools! to their home, if this was done for them also?
