Good for pies and eating fresh. We are enjoying our mulberry bounty here.

Sadly my mulberry got huge and I had to trim the lower branches, so I can't get to the fruit anymore. I can only watch and listen to the birds devouring every last bit. I really liked the taste, even though I missed the usual acidity found in berries. Mulberries don't seem to have any.

It doesn't look quite ripe to me....do a taste test before harvesting a bunch.

Yes, they do get darker and more ripe. The berries on the underside of ripe taste good too because they have a little tanginess that the full ripe don’t have.

They get soft when fully ripe and take on a deep color. They are also voracious self sowers and can spread weedy seedlings all over the place.

I suspect mulberry seeds germinate much better after passing through birds bodies. We don't want these uninvited and unwelcome guests, but they inevitably show up anyway. Methods of removal, recipricating saw, car jack, plutonium bomb.

you should get cuttings of an improved variety and graft to it.

there are several types growing wild. its probably a Morus Alba, but, could be an M Alba x Rubra hybrid too... either one should take grafts from most common varieties.

they grow like weeds (at least they do here in the South)

i can cut them to the ground 10 times, and they just keep coming back... which means you can cut it back hard when grafting.

IMO they are weeds here in the North. And messy ones should they overhang a patio or sidewalks.

Also the ripe berries can be anywhere from white to almost black when they're ripe. Depends on the bush.

Lucky you. Mulberries are full of protein and taste great. Well - among wild plants they are hit or miss, but when yiu get a good one they are very “giving trees.”

Definitely looks like my mulberry. Only the dark purple are tasty--mine are sweet/tart and the two year old tree gives up much fruit year round in So. Cal. Delish. I have read that underripe mulberries can be hallucinogenic. Haven't tested that hypothesis.
