Neither of the parent species (both in the iris family) produce bulbs so you should be safe :-) Belamcanda has been reclassified as Iris domestica and Pardanthopsis is known as vesper iris and is synonymously named Iris dichotoma. They both have somewhat rhizomatous roots but not a real bulb.

Regarding the idea that it's a cross between an iris and a lily, no it's not. The two genera, Iris and Lilium, can't cross.

Belamcanda is called blackberry lily, but it really isn’t a lily. The difficulties with common names . . .

LOL!! 75% or more of the plants with 'lily' in the common name are NOT lilies!! Common names can be extremely confusing, which is why it is always best to rely on the botanical name for clarity :-)

I've had both voles and Pardancandas for many years. I like them very much, but as a general word of advice: early last fall I divided a very overcrowded planting. They simply didn't take hold and heaved all winter. But they are indeed tough. I kept pushing them back in, and though I lost some, most settled in this spring--though they won't bloom this year. So after this, I'll divide them only in spring.

Perhaps someone should notify the Missouri Botanical Garden listing for this plant which states: "Specific epithet honors amateur gardener Samuel Norrisis who in 1967 crossed two different genera, Belamcanda chinensis (blackberry lily) and Pardanthopsis dichotoma (vesper iris) to produce X Pardancanda."

For future reference if it is a lily, the first part of the scientific name is Lilium. So in this case, it can be a blackberry lily, but not be a lily.

Because common names mean nothing....

Dbarron, I like common names for their descriptiveness and general ease of use in many situations, but they aren’t scientific. I have memories of someone from Texas asking about mountain laurels, which caused a lot of confusion since for much of the east coast, it is a totally unrelated plant to the local mountain laurel, Kalmia latifolia. So I typically use both here.

Yes, my point exactly. When I talk with a non-latino (and I don't mean hispanic), I find myself frustrated having to name plants by common names. So much confusion :)

cearbhaill, I'm afraid you haven't quite understood what your research was telling you. In that paragraph the two genera being referred to are Belamcanda and Pardanthopsis. The fact that one has 'lily' in the common name and one has 'iris' doesn't mean that they belong to the botanical genera Lilium or Iris. As the others said above, the common names are misleading. Missouri Botanical Garden is not contradicting what I said above.
