Rouge- does yellow of spring Liberty turn cream colored as the season progresses?

And maybe my Junes are smaller because i divided them. Still, I’d be happy if they got to 2 feet.

Good question @Marie Tulin Boston burbs z 6a as I dont think I have thought much about a colour change for LIBERTY. And I think that it is because it doesnt. I love this hosta lots.

June is the best hosta on the planet. I grow several in 6 hours of sun and the leaves never get burned,

@sherrygirl zone5 N il and for the couple of JUNES I have they get so very little direct sunlight and in a dry location and they do just fine. For sure it is an 'adaptable' hosta.

Each year I post a picture of them. And I still remember you encouraging me to try them as a border many years ago. It used to be one continuous border of LT and then I got bored a few years ago and removed probably 6 of them to insert some compact hydranageas and even with this disruption, the remaining LTs didnt miss a beat. They are healthy and vigorous.

I noticed the yellow leaf on that Autumn Frost. I believe that would be a sport….. anyone know? Pieter??

June looks amazimg!!

Liberty has very bright yellow leaf edges in the spring and then the yellow slowly turns to creamy white.

I will keep an eye on my at least 10 year old LIBERTY this season as I have not noticed this change to a "creamy white". (Doing an online search ondonsee the phrase "creamy white").

Hostas are great, I love them. If only the rabbits did not. [g] 'June' has to be my #1 choice, if I could only have one, that would be it. So many great qualities, including that the leaves are thick enough to not be too attractive to pests and the last to be sampled by the rabbits.

rouge21_gw, interesting that you haven't noticed that your Liberty's edges change to "creamy white" later in the season. The Hosta Library says the edges go from yellow to creamy white. Right now (mid June) I would say that my Liberty's margins are a pale yellow.

I bet I haven't paid attention and so I will keep my eyes peeled this season @newhostalady Z6 ON, Canada. and report back ;).

are there 5 plain green leaves on your Gold Standard? Will you leave them or remove them?

Marie..yes Gold Standard has 5 plain green leaves in the middle of the plant!..I'm ignoring them..the look doesn't bother me..even if the entire plant reverts I can live with it..

personally I wouldn't trade Gold Standard for plain green, unless it was a special green! when June sprouts blue leaves cutting them out and growing them on is worth the work. They are a Halcylon parent and it is still one of the finest blues out there, i think.

Marie Tulin . . . GL is part of the name: Giantland Blue Banana.

Hey Marie, the GL stands for Giantland a like of hostas grown by Jeff (not sure of the last name Owen?) He passed away a couple years ago and his daughter and husband manage the hosta farm now.

You can search for them at Land of the Giants Hosta farm, Milton WI. He was famous for the extraordinary large hostas he developed. I have a few, though they aren’t all huge.

I had 2 large Liberty hostas that seem to have disappeared this past winter. Don't know how since they were very hearlthy very vigorous plants last year?

Today I was visiting a friend who has a spectacular garden and for all the variety that was there my eyes were immediately drawn to of all things a single hosta..."Orange Marmalade". My picture does not do it justice. It just glowed.

Can you see why I'm jealous?

For someone I have never met in person ie @floral_uk z.8/9 SW UK (but of course I would like to :)) I thought about you lots yesterday as I toured my friend's garden smiling quielty recalling your massive indemic slug infestation, as she went on and on about slug damage to her polygonatums and many of her hostas. She claims that her ammonia 'drench' (I forget now the proportions of ammonia to water) applied in the spring to the emerging pips is a solution. But we/you know better, right 'floral'? ;)

Perhaps it never rains after she applied it.😂

It works for me, but must be done in spring and fall. Of course I just have regular slugs, not the mutant slugs floral has!! 😜

Ammonia

It doesn't work here. No DIY technique does. Plenty of things kill snails and slugs on contact but that would involve lurking 24/7 to catch them. Might just as well pick them off by hand a kill them as you go. If the ammonia is meant to kill eggs in the soil that doesn't prevent the incoming creatures from all around.

That’s why I have tow do it in the fall too. To kill eggs that are laid for spring. Sorry this doesn’t work for you floural_uk.

After viewing today my torn and tattered border of hostas "Little Treasure", I am thinking @floral_uk z.8/9 SW UK, that you and I can be "Slug Buddies" ;).

I apologize @newhostalady Z6 ON, Canada. The yellow seen in June has slowly but steadily faded to cream. It is very obvious when comparing pictures from June to now.
