clean cabinets thoroughly...I'd probably leave it at that. Maybe scuff them up a bit and put a few coats of satin topcoat [all of this-easy-slab doors] You could probably fill the holes and get new big knobs or longer handles and some cup pulls on the drawers for a little change which is all I would mess around with. If the grain of the wood is tiresome to you...concentrate on the uppers for a white or very light sage green paint finish, if you want to go that way. the under counter area if cleaned, and cup pulls,etc could look pretty decent left with the wood look.

Cabinets painted white or off white will look better. replace knobs is a good idea too.

However, I personally would replace doors and drawer faces. Make them shaker, or any other style you like. paint them then whatever color you like. I like the idea to paint bottom and top cabinets different colors to make a statement.

Are the cabinets structurally sound? Do you have enough drawer bases? The countertop locks you in to current layout. It sounds like this would be a good candidate for refacing.

If you don't like the Brown/wood look and you don't want the expense of refacing, try just painting one door and see how you like it. I painted my cabinets (oak cabinets) with Annie Sloan chalk paint and waxed them and I like that the wood grain does show through the paint it just gives it more of a wood look rather than just a paint look. (If that makes any sense). I think the grain showing through yours would be very pretty.

You can experiment with colors/finishes by painting the INSIDES of a few of the doors. I’d start with the lower doors since they’re probably not opened as often and for as long as the uppers.
