Their not really molting, more like absorbing the old for the new.

The older pair of leaves usually stay connected to the new pair of leaves at the base. The older pair get absorbed until they become like paper.

Yours is the opposite and honestly looks like a hat;). They’re no longer attached and is doing more harm than good right now because I have a sneaky suspicion if you left older leaves as is, the bottom new set of leaves would begin to rot.

I would very carefully take the old pair of leaves off. Take your time and try not to puncture the new pair of leaves with your fingernails;).

Not sure which plants molt, but Senecio scaposus seems to show a form of it.

Plants like the plantain(not the banana) do undergo a process of shedding their old tree bark. Some yuccas peel of old leaves revealing their trunks. The process with lithops is the one of simply letting out a new pair of leaves from the center of a (mutated) rosette from within the old pair(like a kalanchoe for example). You can see a similar process with a genus of crassulaceae plants called orostachys, with species like orostachys spinuosus.

I'd say that you are overwatering and that your emerging leaves have swelled so much, they ripped the original leaves right off. Please stop watering it before it bursts on you and remove the old leaves gently as Kara has suggested

Yes. Not all lithops will rot if overwatered and this is why we don't grow lithops outside where I live, higher rainfall than they are designed to handle can make them do this

My lithops/stone plant looks like this , is it molting?
