Looks like my NOID big blue hosta that I decided likely is Elegans. Mine is also a monster. Either that or it really is "big blue hosta" as can be seen on this very descriptive label on a package at Walmart. I snapped this pic there a couple weeks ago just because I thought it was so funny. Haha

Does yours make a lot of seedlings?

"BIG BLUE." That's hilarious. But it speaks to the confusion of these Sieboldiana-type blue seedlings and cultivars. It's perhaps best to think of 'Elegans' as a seed strain, where a few near-identical offspring got sold as 'Elegans' or renamed as dhaven lists. 'Blue Angel' could also be a contender, distinguished from 'Elegans' by bloom presentation and seed set (notably, 'Blue Angel' is not very fertile in most gardens).

I have a Blue Angel that sits on my front corner. It took years to id it but the raceme is so very distinctive that is how I did it.

Sorry, I don't really understand about the "seedlings.

back in the day ... 1960s or 70s ... if not further back .....they thought elegans was a species .... and came true from seed ...

it wasnt.. and it didnt ... thought they all were blue ... and very similar ... they were seedlings of elegans.. and not elegans ... teager thinks calling them a 'seed strain' is one way to think of it ....

so its very hard to know if elegans even technically exists .. let alone if anyones big bad blue is actually elegans ...

Thanks, Ken for the link. I actually went through it again as I enjoy reading the history....it has been a while since I checked on the articles in the Hosta Library.

Ken, I took a look at this link, by page 5 my eyes were glazing over! Haha, it's so far over my head. Maybe some day l'lol take a class and understand,but for now I will stick with the info people gave me and have mad the decision that it's a Elegans. ☺️
