Assuming you live where the temps are in the 90s, you should be watering one inch, all at one time, per week.

I lived with my niece in Hemet, CA for a few weeks several years ago. The part of her yard that didn't ever get irrigation was cracked so badly the 4-inch fence poles were leaning over. I put a soaker hose on it, and they closed up before I left. I thought about filling the holes with compost or soil, but the problem is the lack of moisture down deep in the soil. The soil is biologically dead. When it is alive with microbes, the microbes will fill that space. When you see how big the cracks can get you realize how much space the microbes can take up.
