Year Round Windox Box

I have a heavy duty window box on a 2nd story window.

It gets full sun from about 7am til about 2pm I'd guess.

I've been planting cheap, colorful annuals in it, but at some point or another, they always succumb to the heat and parts of them turn crispy brown.

I'd like to put something in there that can stay year round, without having to replace the plants every couple of months. The problem is that we get very hot summers that dry out the box and cold winters that put the plants in danger of freezing to death.

Is this a pipe dream? Are there varieties of dwarf evergreen trees that might survive these conditions?
