What's wrong with my mom's Twilight Zone rose bush?

Hi everybody,

I need a little help with my mom's Twlight Zone rose bush. It's in a pot and it gets full sun. We water it whenever the soil is dry. It's been growing and blooming very well this year up until recently. It's leaves have started to become discolored (mainly brown but other colors as well), they're curling up and have a lot of holes in them. It's not the whole bush, but it's happening in several places. I'll attach some pictures at the end. They're not the best quality but hopefully you can still see what's happening. It is still sprouting new growth (quite a bit actually). I live in northwestern Washington and for the past week or two we've been ranging from mid 70s to lower 90s (mostly staying in the 80s) during the day and dropping into the 60s at night. We have four other kinds of roses and they're all doing great. In fact, our Stainless Steel has exploded with new blooms over the past couple of days. So beautiful. All 5 roses are potted, in case that is important.

This many not matter but I'll put it out there anyway, my parents do have some experience with roses. They're not experts but they do have some experience.

Here are the pictures. Not the best quality but I hope they help. I tried to redo the blurry picture but I couldn't get the lighting right so I eventually gave up. Sorry. I appreciate any help y'all can give me. The TZ is my favorite out of all of our roses.

The holes are a different issue than then brown / dead leaves. Something chewed the holes. Very minor from the picture.

The brown - rose is not happy. I'd take it out of full sun, or put a shade cloth (or even a chair) over it to protect it for some time, until it a. cools down, and/or b. rose becomes more mature (actually a little confusing as in the picture it looks like a new / very young rose, and you mention it's been blooming well this year (?)) Maybe that's just because we're looking at only a section of it.

Looks like well draining soil - you don't need to let it dry out completely between watering. In the summer months in 90's+ when I have potted roses between buying / planting, I'll water them to some degree every day.

The brown leaves will fall off. Rose should recover fine with protection.

In hot weather, many potted plants need to be watered twice a day--morning and afternoon.

I had that happen on one of my roses that was close to my fountain. I think there was slight overspray and it scalded the leaves in the midday sun and heat..

Thank you all for your input! I told my mom about the watering and the shade and she said she'll do it.

Karen, the rose is new. We got it this year. But it grew like crazy and was blooming in no time. My mom was actually a little surprised. The TZ was growing and blooming better than some of our older roses. My apologies for the pictures. I'm not the best photographer. As for the soil drying out in between waterings, I wasn't quite as clear as I should've been. I typed this post after several hours of mind-numbing calculus homework (I'm not the best at math). Anyways, they don't wait for it to be 100% dry before watering again. My apologies for not being clear about that. I think I might go back and edit my original post to fix that. They water them in the early evening. We have a lot of mosquitos because of a retention pond that's really close to our house so my parents try to get out and water them before

Our roses were fine last summer so that's why we're a little perplexed. Only the TZ is unhappy. All of our roses get the same amount of sun and the same watering schedule but four out of five are doing great. Two of them seem like they might have gone dormant or something like that but they still look happy and healthy. Is the TZ a more...sensitive kind of rose? I don't know if that's necessarily the right word, but it's the only one that I can come up with at the moment.

Burgandie, you know, this same thing happened to me with Ebb Tide (a parent of TZ) a few months ago. I had Ebb Tide way to close to Lunar Mist, and she just got swallowed up and covered and stunted. I dug Ebb Tide up late winter, and potted her to let her recover. I had her potted in full sun, and a month or so ago, I found about 50% of her leaves burned (like yours).

I created a new rose bed recently in partial shade, and decided to plant her there about 2 weeks ago. She is absolutely thriving, and you'd have no idea she'd shed half her foliage recently.

I also do have a Twilight Zone. She's in 80% sun. She does fabulously, but again - she's in the ground, and not in a pot.
