refinishing a table

HI All,

I am trying to gather some advice on what to do at this point it my quest to refinish my table. I have sanded with all the necessary grits... finished staining and moved the table back in the house. In the process i accidentally put some dents in the side of the table. There are two leaves...one is off and the other was down when i transfered table inside. It must have hit the edge of my screen door. So the dents are not on top of the table but the side. Question i have is, can I sand it back down enough to remove the dents and just do the stain again? I could see where if I were to have the dent in the middle of the talbe it would pose more of a problem but its on the side. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Couple of options, one is to sand it down and stain again, but you’d have to be careful with new stain overlapping old stain and leaving a darker ring. If it’s a really deep dent, you could use a stainable wood filler, or a wood filler matching you stain (I tend to have better luck with the prestained filler). Or you could do nothing, and leave the dent. If it’s a more traditional/formal table, I wouldn’t do that. If it’s a table with “character” you could get away with it.

Would help to see pics.

My guess is that the dent won't be that noticeable when you put the chairs around it.

You might be able to use a runner to hide the dent. I love the way the second pic shows.

Linen tableware is the easiest way to hide flaws! Long placemats, that look similar to table runners, are very popular right now (like the above photo). Depending on where the dents are, you might consider using a beautiful linen tablecloth.
