I love this rose but what is it? Doesn't look anything like the rose pictured on help me find, which has 41+ petals.

This bud is a little sparse. Here are others from the spring flush.

May I suggest you look into growing Flawless, a fantastic pot cultured rose for you, of incredible beauty, fragrance, with long bloom life. It does black spot for me, though. I do spray so this trait is a non-issue for me.

Thanks for the recommendation, Moses. I will look into it. We’ve had so much rain this year, I’m unsure how long the blooms would last in good weather. Generally, they last only about four days for me after they unfurl, but I usually have so many buds the short time doesn’t bother me.

4 days is not all that short for a bloom's life in hot weather. 2 days length of life for so many rose blooms, particularly Austin's, is the norm when it is very hot.

I hope that Edith's Darling becomes a favorite of mine. It will hopefully work good mixed with Bolero and Flawless for the front of my 8' wide rose bed. White, yellow, and pink mixed together should work. Then, I can shovel prune my mini roses now functioning as front of border roses, hiding the naked knees of the floribundas behind them.

The minis are black spot and spider mite magnets, needing diligent spraying, and even then will still show some black spot and mite damage. The minis are very winter hardy, though. I have winter protected Flawless and Bolero so far, being newer roses to me, but may eventually show to need no protection like the minis don't.

Now Bolero, Flawless, and possibly Edith's Darling, all may be equally susceptible to black spot and mite damage, but their bigger blooms will be more in line with the floribundas behind them. The mini's blooms really look more tiny than they are next to the floribundas.

This rose is beautiful and grown in a pot, which doubles its value for those with city spaces. Very nice. I like the little point on the end of the petal. Very lovely!

What's the true color?

The pics are accurate. Pure deep yellow. A little peach on the buds but not the blooms.

Rose - 4 feet tall?!!

I just purchased Edith's Darling from a 50% off sale, and am about to plant her. I keep reading she's tiny - about 2.5' x 2.5', so I was about to put her in a spot appropriate for that small size. I'm in your same area, so if she's going to get bigger, I need to rethink the spot. From your pictures I am very excited!

Hi Karen, yes I am really surprised that all 6 of my Edith's Darling grew to 4 feet. I was expecting smaller shrubs. I checked the height today and below is a picture showing the top part is at 4 feet

I got them at the Devil Mountain Nursery in the SF Bay. They are all grafted, probably on Dr. Huey though I am not certain. There is nothing special about my soil - like other places in the SF Bay, I have alkaline clay soil. So yours will probably grow to this height too. They are very floriferous, tend to grow as round shrubs but as I mentioned before, they have poor disease resistance. It will be a good idea to spray them preventively in the spring and also in the fall. Mine started to get leave spots/black spots towards the end of August. In fact I just battled leave spots on Edith's Darling just 2 weeks ago. They are in better shape now after multiple fungal sprays.

Interestingly, I just went to the Huntington Rose Garden in San Marino CA. There I saw a Edith Darling that is perhaps no more than 1 and 1/2 feet tall. I am really surprised it is so small. The weather down in LA is even hotter. I am surprised that one in the Garden is not taller - after all the garden is maintained by Tom Carruth, the person who hybridized Edith's Darling.

The parent of Edith's Darling is the popular Julia Child. I also have 8 bushes of Julia Child and found JC is far more diseaes resistant and the flowers are larger.

My Edith's Darling had yellow roses last year, but this year they are all pink? Lots of big flowers, but pink! Why did they turn pink???? I bought from Heirloom with own root, never grafted----
