It's a tricky situation! Western exposure could be tough on any flowering plant, especially hydrangeas. But the sun from 9am to 4pm would be even more challenging.

However, we don't know exactly where you are located. The zone numbers can be misleading sometimes because they are based on the lowest winter temperature, so they are more useful in determining plant hardiness. More info would help.

thanks for the advice. The hydrangeas are mopheads and lacecaps. zone 6 a in central Ohio.

I live in zone 6 as well. Hydrangeas love water (hence the name) and dislike anything like wind or hot sun that dries them out. where I live they are beautiful on the sheltered side of my house and stilted when I tried to grow them on the windy side of my house. Maybe move them to a more sheltered spot?

I agree with other poster on protecting the hydrangeas. If you can leave them in the spot but plant something that blocks the west sun ... that could help. hydrangeas do have great flowers. I get asked for them out here in SoCal and we have to be very specific where we plant them.

Red Berm, there is really no way to shelter them from the afternoon sun. I had a maple tree at one time that could have done the job but it died. My new maple just isn't large enough to shade them. One of the hydrangeas is ~ five feet across -- I haven't had the nerve to move it yet! That having been said, the new site I chose is dappled morning sun.
