hydrangeas burned up by afternoon sun

I have three hydrangeas against the northwest-facing wall of my home. This past winter, I babied them to protect against the inevitable frost in April. (I even built a box around one and covered it with leaves. It looked ridiculous.) At any rate, we had some very hot weather one week (heat index in the low 100s) which is rare for this area. The hydrangeas actually became scorched. I would like to move them but the only available area is in the back yard where I get sun from 9 am until ~ 4 pm. Will that be too hot? I intend to amend the soil before hand to make the best new home for them. Zone 5-6 and clay soil.
