Could be, but the cissus doesn't have the purple lef veins and purple stems. It hasn't bloomed yet, and I worry it won't, since it's in mostly shade. I've planted a few stem sections that were growing along the ground and had roots so I can see what happens. I thought if it were Malabar spinach it would have bloomed by now, but maybe the shade makes a difference.

I won't know for sure until it blooms, so I guess patience is the key.

ETA: The Atlas of Florida Plants says that Cissus verticillata only grows in South Florida, and I'm in North Florida.

I've only seen malabar spinach a time or two at the green market, so can't say with any conviction, but Something tells me(the leaves) it is not malabar spinach. It looks similar to a weed I've seen growing in the "woods"

You know, it looks more like air potato to me. I've not seen malabar spinach with such regular leaves.

It's not air potato. I know what those leaves look like, and there is no red in them. I'm going to wait until it blooms, if it ever does. Anyway, it's very pretty with it's silvery leaves and dark red stems.

All the malabar spinach I've seen for sale is the green variety, so no, it wouldn't look like the red variety.

I hope it blooms so I can identify it once and for all.

It looks a lot like yams but the color of the leaves is off . Does it have square stems?

Glenn, no it has round stems just like the Malabar spinach. The older leaves are silvery, but the younger leaves are green. It's very pretty, so I'll grow it anyway. :)

The silvery are what makes it unique

I know, and I don't remember malabar spinach leaves getting that big, but from what I've read, they sometimes escape into the wild and they do get very large. I can't wait to see if that's what it is when it blooms.

I am going to say no. All the malabar I've ever grown has a very think very red stem all the way to the tendrils. The leaves are much more... thick and glossy and dark dark green. If it is malabar you won't need to take cuttings at all. It reseeds extremely well on it's own. Good luck!

Yes, that's way the red malabar I've seen has always looked--very stemmy, with lots of variable small leaves.

BTW I didn't mean I thought that it was air potato, necessarily, just that to me it looks closer to that than to any malabar spinach I've seen, but then I've only seen it about half a dozen different places. It's one of those greens I want to love, but just don't.
