I know some natural stone can be sanded by a professional. I hope someone else will chime in.

You're probably right about the wax having been removed. Is it also scratched under the marks? (It doesn't look like it.) Unless there was some special kind of "finish" put on there, it shouldn't need to be resanded. You just need to keep using whatever you have been using (wax/oil/combo) until it gets back to it's original state.

I am a fabricator. There isn't any "wax" (or at least there isn't supposed to be) on soapstone or any other countertop food prep surface. It's quite likely the oven cleaner stripped the mineral oil or enhancer from the stone leaving the discolored areas. Ask the fabricator what they used; there's a good chance a reapplication of the same product will eliminate the discolorarion. You'd be surprised how often cleaning people or guests are the source of damage to countertops. Guest chefs with granite at home are notorious for scorching quartz counters away from home because they're used to putting items fresh from the oven or stove anywhere they want.

oldryder, soapstone counters are often waxed. I have wax and I have oil and prefer the oil, but it is a preference.

Christina, one of the things that I've found with my soapstone counters is that what's here today is often gone tomorrow! As the counters age or as the wax/oil dissipates, the marks also disappear. I'm certain that if you use the oil or wax for a few days your problem will also disappear! You haven't hurt the stone, just the wax.
