I bought an Apache (corrected from Arapaho) thornless blackberry yesterday from the clearance rack at Lowe's for $3. It has a couple of very long canes, so I figured I could ground layer it to maybe get a couple more plants by next spring.

I have a place to put it that gets summer sun from about noon to 3, then it's partially shade from 4 to 5 in the afternoon, then gets late afternoon/early evening sun after 5. I have bananas growing on that side (which are coming out) and they get plenty of sun, so I figured these would too. In the winter, when the trees are bare, it gets sun from 10 to 4. I did think about putting it against the wall inside the courtyard, trellissing it against that wall that gets full afternoon sun all year long (where I used to grow my tomatoes), but I decided I'd rather grow some cucumbers there to see how they'd do

I've grown blackberries before, but not in FL. I know the ones I had (not this variety) in SC did well with some afternoon shade, so I figured for $3, it was worth a chance.

Oh -- and if you're wondering why I'm planting all this stuff when I'm leaving in a year, I've decided to do the van dwelling part-time for a year to see how I take to it, so I may as well get some fruits and veggies before then. Where I'm planning on planting it won't bother the neighbors, and they can have some blackberries when I'm gone in the summer if they want, which may keep them quiet. In the meantime, I'll be looking for someone to take care of the gardens in the summer when I'm gone so they won't complain too much.
