help decorating a cherry craftsman kitchen

We are renovating a home with this bold and beautiful kitchen. We will be keeping the cabinets, but updating with wood floors, counters, etc. Do you see any potential for a contrasting kitchen island? Any suggestions for a color scheme? Thank you for your suggestions!

Look up craftsman colors. I believe sherwin williams puts out a card with craftsman colors. I would do a lighter wood floor.

Your kitchen is really grand and pretty. Are you set on wood floors ? A brick or natural stone floor would be very nice, too. You could consider a slate flooring with a range of colors . Even though slate would be a darker look, the variation of colors would be beautiful , since you do have large windows that provide a lot of light in the kitchen. Many lighter wood tones will look too modern for a craftsman style, unless they are very rustic in character / style - like hickory or french oak. You might consider something lighter with a transparent gray stain . As far as the island goes, I’m not knowledgeable about “craftsman colors “ but I wouldn’t think a craftsman style kitchen requires a certain type of color to still be craftsman. (?) Although, something in the green, blue, or lighter earth tone families would probably be best. From that range, I would paint the island any color that appeals to you , as long as it is light enough to provide contrast with your outer cherry cabinetry( if painting it at all ) . A sage , light teal or gray green would be beautiful imo . Perhaps , let the colors in your adjoining decor guide that color choice.

Sending some flooring inspiration pics. Obviously disregard the fact that the one K pic is of a contemporary K . - but just looking at the wood coloration -

Take more photos. It appears a kitchen that should have had a peninsula versus an island........

Wow, thank you for some stunning solutions! I have been having trouble visualizing wood floors (although grey or light wood seems to work best) with these reddish cabinets, but natural stone or slate is perfect in this room. Stone will also reflect the exterior, which is a woodsy mountain setting.

The rest of the main floor will be wood, but if we run slate in the kitchen area we won’t have to worry about coordinating it so exactly with the cherry.

And painting the kitchen island a green, blue or grey that is inspired by the slate helps everything fall into place.

The kitchen has a symmetry to it, so I think that is why an island was chosen.
I’ll take some more pics today.

Laura Villar you are not the first to comment on that. They look better in person for some reason.

    Lovely kitchen.

I too think if you took down the glass (probably lighted) upper cabinets above the window that it could really open the space to create a lightness to the normally heavy feel of a craftsman mission style space. However if they look better in person, keep them. It is your kitchen make it your beautiful space.

I love your idea of painting the island a different color. And perhaps going with a different counter and backsplash. Historical paint from the craftsman period might be a little too dull for your space. Arts and Crafts had colors that were olive greens and dark rust colors that might make your space look dated. Especially since your kitchen has a bit more elegance. Here is a link on color palettes Craftsman color palettes If you looked at that link did you like any specific color? I personally happen to think blue or grays might work in your space. Those were not in the link because gray blues were not a traditional arts and crafts color. If you are looking at a blue or a gray I think it would have to be the right gray something leaning toward a green or blue color.

    Here are some pretty ideas.

This has beams similar to your beam. Notice the dark rust colored drapes and floors with a rustic feel.

I never would have thought of gray but this is pretty to me.

Crownpoint cabs below have a lightness with the lighter blue for this very arts and crafts style space.

This one has a pretty slate floor and darker island.

This last one is more rustic than your kitchen and the olive rust red colors look nice here. I think yours needs slightly cooler colors. JMHO

i think if u change the island i would also change the glass cabinets to tie it together. i like them as accent cabs and it probably looks really pretty at night.

are u changing out the appliances? if so go for a counter depth/integrated frig, will look much nicer.

as far as color: i would pick out your counter and b/s & floors and then paint. you can match anything today. much easier to match paint to counters then vice-versa. also with the other elements picked out, then you can pick a color for the island and glass cabs, if u go that route.

bring a cab door with you to stone yard.

maybe put in some glass cab doors on the uppers to "lighten" the overall "heaviness" of the uppers.

    Good Luck!!

It is beautiful. Full of light with such nice cabinets.

I would wait on changing the flooring until you have lived there for a year. The island looks like a barrier island to me and I would get tired of walking around it all the time. I wonder if it possible to use those cabinets to reconfigure into a peninsula. Anyway, I would wait on the ktichen flooring in case you decide to do something to alter the layout.

If you want to keep that row of cabinets, I wonder if there would be away to even out the other cabinets to reach the height trim that would reach the ceiling? topper? I can’t think of the name that is used for that kind of trim. Also, not sure with the angle of the walls it could even be done. If they are beautiful in person, I believe you, however from this pic it just looks off, unbalanced? still love the kitchen :-) can’t wait to see when you complete
