You need curtains for warmth in the room. I like your idea of the drapes and to mount them higher as shown in the image you pulled. You have a lot of height in your space so you can do that but not a must. I agree the velvet sounds a bit heavy to me but then the color in your images is not clear. Better shots might change my mind. The door needs a roman mounted on it in a fabric that matches the curtains.

Hand-scraped flooring and chambray and lighting doesn't seem velvety. I agree about the linen, etc...

I suspect velvet drapes in those lengths will be too heavy for the clips. Personally, I wouldn't want floor-length drapes that need to be dry-cleaned in a dining nook, because messes happen. Cotton or linen will still add texture and warmth, and it would be easier to coordinate drapes in the living area with roman shades on the door and dining area windows.

Ring clips are not going to be able to support heavy velvet draperies. Use a more substantial system.

My daughter had heavy, velvet drapes in her last house and I was not a fan (I do love velvet, not for drapes). You could go with a lined linen or jacquard (I just made 4 pairs of drapes for my house with jacquard and black out lining) and they will be heavy enough without being as heavy as velvet would be. When using clips, you do not want your drapes to be heavy!

I would do a light breezy curtain in this space--definitely NOT velvet--and for sure mount them all at the 96" height.

I'm a big fan of aiming for the color of the wall for curtains.

You mentioned two different lengths of panels, I don't think that will work, they need to be the same height,..two different heights on that back wall would not be good.

I love drapes, but be aware the panel closest to your fireplace would be a fire hazard. Hang them all at the same height. Save up to increase your budget so that you can use "real" rings (not clip rings).
