Too late in the season for fertilizer to be of much benefit, plus, it could encourage growth that doesn't have sufficient time to ripen or harden off fully before cold weather hits. and will therefore be overly susceptible to cold damage. Generally, fetilizing after the end of July is considered a no-no for landscape plants.....unless you advocate fall fertilizing (October) for woody plants with a very low N fert.

And fertilizer is not a panacea for various plant ills. As long as your soil drains reasonably well (no puddling or standing water after the rain stops) the plants will recover on their own. Compost won't hurt, though :-)

Yellowing could be due to root damage

Yes, I'm thinking that the plants are yellowing from being too wet. What type of plants are we talking about here, vegetables or something else?
