The round rod shaped pieces are pieces of crinoid stems. Most have a hole through the center of the stem. This hole may be closed in the fossilized form to dirt filled. These center holes have various forms from round to star shaped and different species have different shaped holes. The shape of this hole helps to identify the species. Fossilized pieces of stems are easily recognized and found in several locations, but the head is less common. Crinoid stems may be the first stones collected by new rock hounds, however, the crinoid head is considered very desirable by serious collectors.

These fossils can be associated with limestone deposits (and elsewhere) and may be embedded in limestone. However, these fossils may be harder than limestone, more toward quartsite, and are more durable than limestone. Crinoids lived in oceans.

Back in the days of graveled roads, children searched the gravel for crinoid stems and often referred to those as "Indian Beads". When the holes are cleaned, these can be strung to make a fine string of beads.

There are other fossils in your rock slabs that I do not recognize. A couple of these are good specimens. Keep note of where you found these. There could be crinoid heads in that deposit.

Its common to think of crinoids being plants, but they are classified as animals. They may have been anchored to the sea bed with a "hold fast", but their heads had tiny arms that directed food particles toward their mouth; The head also contained a digestive system.

It has been estimated that crinoids lived 490 million years ago, therefore you have an old fossil!
