All above assumes you own a freestanding home , not any type affecting another resident or even!!! in a building where you own your walls.

Beth is correct. Permits have their place for a host of reasons and first is safety. BUT in many cases and for simple structure? Think of them as a fishing license to use a worm on a safety pin with a bobbin...at the end of a tree branch .....,,with a six year old nephew.

Your best bet is check with your town. No one here knows your local requirements. You might be able to find out online on your towns website. That job would require a permit in most states.
