Clean up all of the plant debris. Nematodes are in the foliage this
time of year so if its gone, they should be gone. At most, they might
overwinter in the crown, but since you're removing that, just plop the rock.

Just be advised that if you plant a rock this late in the season, it probably won't bloom.

I would suggest some research on depth of rock planting. Depending on the type they may not thrive if buried too deeply.

Thinking about meteors: Perseid meteor shower will be at it's peak this weekend. Should be able to see about 70 meteors each hour.
