Well too much space - that's a good problem to have. :) isn't the rug in front of the closet - if so you need to keep it open for closet access. What's going to be in the closet - shoes/jackets n such? If so, maybe put a bench there? Is this front door what you will use regularly or will you be coming in/out garage door more?

I would highly recommend putting a sitting chair in the corner where the rug is! The plant can still serve as an accent to complement that same space.

You have so much room, its amazing! Maybe throw a shoe storage rack or some sort of armoire there to store your coats and "out the door" things. Then hang a decorative mirror over that entry table so that after you put on your coat and shoes, you can check how fabulous you look as you walk out the door! :)

Thanks all for fabulous input and compliments! The rug doesn't block the closet (coats), as it is a very large space. I was thinking that I would put a mirror over the table. We use both the front door and garage door, equally I would say. The garage door also opens to another space, which is supposed to be a mudroom. Then that turns a corner and is ???? I don't know!

I am honestly not trying to be a smartass here, but why do you feel you have to 'do' anything? You do have a lot of space, but how lucky are you, to have a mudroom AND what appears to be a large closet? Unlike in my home, you could easily avoid the necessity of leaving shoes lying out in the open if you wanted!;) A large piece of art for above the table will go a long way toward making the space feel more dressed, and I probably would move the plant, either to where the shoes are, or maybe in the corner where your table and mudroom wall meet. I would also suggest a considerably larger rug for the area in front of your door. I think this will create an attractive, cohesive entryway. I would also suggest you move the (faux?) sheepskin to another location altogether, and leave the area in front of the closet uncluttered. You have a really lovely home, with a gorgeous, spacious entryway, how I envy you!

It looks so empty to me (which is why I feel I have to do something) - although it is modern I still want it to feel cozy! I agree the sheepskin doesn't belong there - my daughter just loves it and we don't know where to put it! :) The little rug there is just a placeholder and I love the idea of putting something larger there (the multi colored stripes idea is great!). Teal vase - check!

I would do one of two things. 1) I would put an oversized piece of art on the wall where you have the little table now, and I would put a piece of furniture under the window in the corner with two lamps on it. Or 2) I would put that piece of furniture on the wall where the little table is now, and I would put an accent chair with a small table in the corner by the window.

I would suggest painting your front door. Black, always classic, would provide some drama and contrast, but I also think it would be fun to go with a blue that matches your sofa. I found a few rugs and paintings (Etsy) that echo the colours from your living/dining room. First, some rug ideas.....

Embrace the breathing room! Instead of a congested tight entry, the architect designed you a calming and open one. I would ditch that tiny little rug and move the plant somewhere else in the house (i love it, but seems out of scale there). You may want a small bench under that little window for putting on shoes.

You could use that area off the foyer as a mud room, home office if needed, could be done quite nice, just make sure you make it pleasing to the eye from off that foyer area

How luxurious to have the space. There is so much you can do.

I might do a bench or desk in the front, or art as suggested, and if going with art I'd consider a round table or even cool round ottoman/bench in that second area.

I have to laugh, I take it you don't have kids in this house; I'd never wonder how to fill space! I'd be filling with storage to hide tons of things.

If you have an available outlet, I would put a table with a floor lamp nearby. Because you have the floor space, a floor lamp and they are easier to switch on, especially if you can make a wall switch turn on a lamp. I enjoy the Craftsman Tiffany floor lamps also, but if you want a floor lamp, you can enjoy the window shopping at this website lampsplus.com and others you may know of. Lamp lighting is a great way to soften the light in any area. All the Franklin lamps are very nice! and any would be great in your home in any room. So many options! I would put a beautiful stained wood piece where you have the small console table. Move the console table in the entry for mud room and put a mirror above it. Place a fun accent chair, rug and small table in the corner off the entry.

Thanks everyone! I have loved reading all the ideas! We do have kids - we just try like mad to keep their toys and whatnot contained to their room! :)

I ordered a mirror, a rug that echoes the dining room one but in gray and a small bench that actually mimics the couch. Also, a teal planter for an orchid. I will post photos when it's done!
