Ideas for replacing tile

So we removed a large column that I hated but it's left a 12x12 space on my floor. The tiles are 16x16. I originally thought I would just have the whole thing retiled (it's only about 50-60 square feet). I don't think patching it is an option because I don't think we have any leftover tile - this was done by the previous owners but we are going to check on last place for extra tile. Anyway, I'm looking for maybe creative things to do to this area without ripping up all the tile and baseboards, etc. Any ideas or do I just need to bite the bullet. I am posting a pic when the column was there and now. I didn't think too far ahead on my plans because I just wanted the column gone. It was that bad.

What was the coluumn holding up? How was that weight distibuted . You can’t just take out something without knowing why it was there. Where do the 2 doors go. Is this an apartment? If this is an entry inside an apartment then the amount of stuff being tracked in will be minimal so I would go a nice light coored tile or better yet wood to match the rest and a nice floor mat.

I don’t see a picture of the column in place, but I can imagine it based on the “hole” in the tiles. Fantastic idea to have it removed!!! If this were my place, I’d be tempted to replace the dark tiles with something lighter and funner.

Did you have a contractor check to ensure the column wasn’t load bearing? If you didn’t get that done quickly or you will have serious issues soon. If you don’t need the column for support I would replace the floor there. Definitely something lighter.

Is the mirrored area to the right a closet? Is the floor made of the same tile? Check it out as a possible source for replacement tile....if it can be gently removed without breaking.... Just a thought!

If you want a simple fix, don't worry about matching the tile. Instead, install any tile of the same thickness to fill in the hole, grout it, and put down a small area rug in front of the door. You can go for a re-tile of the whole area at some time in the future.

Thank you for your responses. It is not structural - I wouldn’t have removed it without knowing that first. Sorry the other pic wouldn’t post, not sure why. I posted it here. It was hideous and No idea why they thought it was a good place to put it. There is another column in the kitchen that they used to run the electrical through so I am working on a fix for that too. Some sort of “column” will have to stay there just not these horrible ones. I think they added 2 additional so it looked “better” with 3?

The door to the left is the front door and the one on the right is the garage door.

The mirrors are just mirrors. Another odd decorative feature they added that I’m. Not huge fan of but I can live with.

Thanks again for your ideas. I agree about the light fun tile.

how about a small console type table for keys and things? sort of like what is across the hall, but lower to floor to hide the missing tile. Then I would remove the other table to open up the space.

You could place a narrow console at the angle of the wood floor and then put a rug in front of the door, again remove the existing table to open up space near the door
