gosh this is moving fast. So, briefly, thank you for the pics that tell me you haven't any particular colours established in the dining area, but you do have a notice board with bright colours in the photographs. And so I wouldn't go all rose and mist in the living room area. I think Celerygirl is right on point with the colours she's using. I particularly like the second picture. But I'd still use a round wooden table that blends with Beautiful and the floors. Please give Beautiful a treat for modelling.

I did mock up for inspiration, your rug and sectional are neutral color, so you can use any color you like.

Don't like teal? Well now aren't you a difficult lady? How about that mustardy yellow combined with burnt orange or terracotta? Or maybe, best to go back to finding the perfect art, and then picking the colours from that. But I do think they should be somewhat on the bright side but not over-modern -- because your dining area is so gentle and cottagey. Do you like sunset scenes?

I just want to gently interject that art should not be a decoration accessory but rather something that touches your soul and speaks to you deeply. That is the only kind of art worth having. Genuine art, which doesn't have to cost an arm and a leg, can be a lifelong companion whereas prints don't have that depth and meaning, and one often tires of them quickly. Some photography, like the pictures of Ansel Adams, is also art and can enrich your life and your home. Try flea markets for great finds but also original works on e-bay, of which those posted by the artists are often very reasonable. Lots of bad art there too so one has to be discriminating.

If you like more neutral décor,like I do, creams. oatmeals, grey, and white look really great too! I would do pillows and a throw in a pattern incorporating some of the neutrals in the area rug....with different textures and layers... Doesn't sound too exciting but can be very lovely.

If you want something that pops and helps brighten the place, I think magenta and/or purple tones would go really well (either muted or bright), with some off-white accents. If you prefer neutrals, navy and white patterns can really add some visual structure without overwhelming with color. I would also think about some sort of patterned drape with maybe a solid rug--like a patterned curtain with lots of magenta, some magenta and off white pillows, and a fuzzy or a textured off white rug. The grey tones are neutral enough that you could go with some bold patterns. I have grey walls, a light grey couch, and I love the west elm carved coffee table pictured as well (they have a longer oval shape too).

Ingrid is right about choosing art you love, of course, and has put the point with such delicacy. But I don't see any harm in looking for art that will enhance the look you are going for in a room.

However, I don't go with the current feeling against prints. I have a mix of original art and prints, and the prints give me every bit as much pleasure as the originals -- because, of course, they are prints of pictures I love. And I get to see them every day.

I believe it should be about 2/3rds the length of your sofa? You can try and tape out a few sizes with painters tape and post pictures for advice. But your sofa is in the corner, so you may need something centered on wall? I'd wait to see if any of the pros can help..

yes , I agree with Dominica. I think the size above sofa is perfect or you could do a few pieces of art,,,,say three.... that equal to approximately the same size as one big one would be. Love to see a pic when u r done!

Aside from all the wonderful comments and suggestions, I would look to add some greenery to the room or the dining area. An easy option is the Ikea Fladis basket with a tall artificial plant. Simple and inexpensive.
