What would you do? Wrong kitchen door ordered (I think)

last modified: 8 years ago

Well, my kitchen renovation has been going smoothly until...Friday.

Sorry for the long post. And I apologize..I have no idea why my some of my photos posted sideways. Anyone know how to edit and fix this?

I am working with a highly recommended kitchen place. The owner has installed over 3500 kitchens in his career. He is very easy to work with and really great at what he does. My husband and I met with him at the showroom on 4 different occasions. We went over many different choices and we looked at a few different cabinet style doors. He never referred to the cabinet door styles by name. After several meetings we placed our order at the end of May. We sat down and he wrote it all up. The main display in his showroom is a big white kitchen on display right when you walk in. We sat at the island to discuss all the choices....and I am pretty sure I requested the white door on display in that kitchen. I have one photo which shows the door. See 1st photo below. (It's not a great photo bc I was really taking it for the backsplash). It's a very clean style. No bevel. He wrote up the order on the spot...and I made the mistake of not double checking the details when I signed it...I don't know why! I was a project manager in my prior career so I ALWAYS double check...but for this one time I didn't.
Lesson learned...but we had JUST talked about it all.

Friday my cabinets arrive and I panic! It's not the door I ordered...or so I think. The second photo is the door I got. Some bevel, a little more traditional than what I wanted. Long story short, I called the owner. He went through all his notes and he said we ordered the "Hawthorne" door. Either I did, and I forgot bc I have made SO many decisions picking out my kitchen i am losing my mind...or there was a miscommunication and he wrote down the wrong style door. BUT I signed the order. Again..why I didn't double check? I don't know...I always do. In any case, he could tell I was upset on the phone and said the installers will hang the cabinets this week and if I am still unhappy with the doors he will replace them all at cost. I thought that was a nice gesture considering I did sign the order that said "Hawthorne"...but with a custom kitchen cabinet it's not a small expense even at cost.

I showed my sister and my kids...and they all said they think the cabinets I rec'd actually work better in my house, and the door I got is still a "clean" style. See 3rd picture, The 3rd picture is me standing in my old kitchen (before demolition) looking into family room. As you can see the doorway opening is huge.

Here is a closeup of that room. (The couch is gone..doing a lighter color, maybe light blue? To brighten up the space). As you can see this cabinet style is more traditional. The fact that my kitchen and this room open to each other with such a large doorway has definitely been a concern. I picked Viatera Soprano as my countertop bc its off white and has touches of grey and beige. Didn't want to do a bright white counter or a counter with too much grey bc of this adjacent room. I feel like there has to be some flow btwn these rooms. Floor will be wood in both

...What would you do? Stick with what I got...maybe it's a blessing in disguise, because it's a little closer in style to my adjacent room...or swap them out for what I wanted all along? I am still under budget so I CAN afford to do it...but I'm sure there will be more expenses that pop up along the way.

I agree that what you've received is a better fit with your other cabinets. If everything else is in order then maybe this is serendipitous.

Your accident door style looks pricier, and seems to go well with the rest of your house based on the couple of pictures. I would go with simple style hardware.

I would call it a fortuitous mistake because I think the doors you received are much more elegant and interesting than the ubiquitous white Shaker doors. The style is not over the top and it actually looks better with what appears to be your fairly traditional furniture.s

Blessing in disguise indeed...much more suited to your home
    Be happy!
Probably a pricier door as well ;)

The door is the expensive part of the cabinet. And your kitchen is custom. Can you afford to pay cost for a set of new doors? I know what you thought you ordered is not what you got, but what's done is done. How many doors and drawers are in your kitchen? You could give up a week of vacation if having the right doors is important to you. I would.

If you want more traditional that work w/your cabs in this room, then the ones you got probably will give you that.

If you did a brushed brass or soft gold hardware, it would look really nice w/the quartz.

I like either style. That's very accommodating of the owner to do that for you. The fact that you signed the order and know you made the mistake and yet he's still willing to make you happy, is a sign of a good businessman.

I was trying to find pictures of the Soprano w/your style cabinets. I only found this

almost looks like she used a filter on these pics.

Soprano appears much creamier in this photo.

it seems like your cabs would look similar to these? are you doing in glass in the doors? maybe that would help you out a bit

Do you have a copy of the order? When we built our house a while back they installed the wrong bathroom tile. We went onsite and found the one we had requested, and when she looked at the order she realized she couldn’t read her own handwriting and had written the wrong name over top of the one she couldnt read. You may as well check because if it is their fault then they should remedy it that’s what you want.

Well I like the ones you received, but that's because they are same as the ones I picked. I liked the bevel over a plane shaker.

I agree, I like the doors you received for your home.

I like Shaker doors, but the ones you ended up receiving do suit what looks to be a more traditional style home & furnishings.

Those kitchen cabinets won’t scream, “Hi, I was installed in the teens,” a few years from now like your original choice would.

Serendipity indeed. What you received is a much better choice for your home.

Thank you everyone. I would say the furnishings in my home are for the most part transitional and "American" traditional if that makes any sense. When I say American traditional I meaning clean, simple lines...as opposed to European traditional which would be furnishings with carvings, more ornate etc. The built ins in this family room are definitely traditional -- they were here when I moved in so I left them. ...tried to brighten up the room with the yellow accents and rug to play off the yellow inset in the fireplace. (I probably wouldn't have chosen yellow for the stone, but it was existing so I worked with it). I am going to keep the doors. I do believe it's a blessing in disguise. If this is the worst mistake I encounter I will be happy! I was planning to do a clean simple hardware and some clean looking lights to give some more modern accents. Thanks again for your help!

Beth H. - thank you for searching up the Soprano quartz. I have a sample of the stone. It's an off white...with touches of beige and grey. It looks so different in every photo I have found online. On the Viatera home page its looks more cream I think because the cabinets it is displayed with are brown. When I have seen it again white cabinets online, the grey accents show more.....I guess I will have to wait and see how it shows in my house with my cabinets and lighting. I didn't pick a back splash yet for this very reason. I want to see how it all works. I like the idea of a brushed gold or bronze for hardware. Never thought of that before. I have a only a few windows in my cabinets. I can't afford too many bc I need the storage space. Thanks again for your help!

My favorite door style is shaker but shaker works with my craftsman house style. It does not work with your more formal style and the doors you wound up with work perfectly with your house style.

What you wound up with is much more elegant. If you had picked what you wound up with and got shaker style, I would have suggested replacing them with what you actually got. Very, very happy mistake!

the ones you picked are very nice, the others are dated - in my opinion. if it didnt say "Hawthorn" on the order he could have edited his "notes" any time. get what you wanted and dont pay more...

Update: Okay I thought I was sold on keeping the "Hawthorne" door and now having some second thoughts. The cabinets started going in today. The installer started with the most difficult part of the room (which makes sense), but it is a long wall with a lot of cabinetry. It will consist of my stainless double oven on end (with small cabinet above), 2 floor to ceiling pantry's in the middle, and the built in stainless fridge on the other end. Of course appliances aren't here yet so I am looking at a whole lot of white cabinetry on the wall right now...and back to contemplating if I should keep this Hawthorne door. Without having the appliances in and nothing else to look at, these doors appear busy :(. The shaker doors on a wall this long would not have appeared this busy....ugh. At the end of the wall is a door to my basement which has almost the exact same style as my cabinet door!...almost too much of a match.

Tomorrow he will work on the other side of the room There will be more dimension -- different cabinet sizes, drawers etc. There will also be an island. I wish I could fast forward and see the room with appliances, counters, lights...I know once the room is full your eye gets drawn to different things.

I feel like I can't make a fair assessment now until I see more done. If I didn't have this long wall of cabinets, I don't think I would be reconsidering my decision....I will post some pics when more of the cabinets are installed.

The good news is the installer is amazing. Total perfectionist! The bad news is he works slow. Cabinet maker wants to know by Friday if I want to swap out the doors but the installer just told me he is most likely only going to be able to come this week through Wednesday. Hoping I can get a little more time to make my decision if not much more gets installed.

We really needed a new kitchen. The old one was put in 20 years ago and many things were starting to fail...but making these big decisions kind of takes the fun out of it. I am not cut out for renovating - stressful!

if you can afford the new doors get them as you are ambivalent of the current ones and once you are finished you may not get them at cost.. but before you do make sure that the shaker is what you want... I looked at a hundred door styles before i decided on a maple truffle shaker for my kitchen.. clean lines and simple.. do what is in your heart and don't let anyone sway you.. ask the kitchen guy if he has a few white shaker doors you can bring home to hang and see the difference.. :-)

It goes better with the family room cabinet style. I do not prefer it, but feel you should keep it for that reason.

Sandra, post a picture! When we started picking out our cabinets, I wanted a simple shaker door, or so I thought. Since we were using a custom cabinet maker my husband fought me for a little more of an interesting shaker design, and I’m glad I let him have his way. The added style really makes a difference.
I much prefer the door you were given than the shaker. Shaker is far too HGTV and overdone right now. Your doors have visual interest and the raised panel is so pretty. Not to mention it clearly matches in your home better. I hope it works out for you whichever you choose.

Can you live with those doors through the holidays and then decide? Why does he need your decision now if you are paying for the new doors anyways? Relax, enjoy the space, give yourself a little time to see how it goes after counter tops and hardware are in place. Right now you want a working kitchen, get it and recharge your battery for round # 2 if needed :)

A large swath of white cabinets isn’t a door profile issue. It’s the overall design issue. You would have the same issue regardless of the door style.

    Post a picture.

luckyblueeye - maybe bc they are painted cabinets and new doors 6 months later may not match exactly? Paint exposed to the elements in a kitchen I am guessing could change? I should prob ask that question....but since he is willing to offer me new doors at cost and technically I signed the order for the door I got (whether he made the mistake or I did, I'll never know) ...not sure how difficult I can be .

I will post more pictures at the end of today when I get back home. Also other sections of cabinets will be installed. I think looking at just one long wall of cabinets only right now is throwing me off.

Sophie Wheeler -- But the Shaker door with no raised panels is a cleaner look. I do think a simpler door in wide span of cabinetry would look better. Will post pics at the end of day when I am back home and then more will also be installed.

Sara Sitardites -- your kitchen is stunning! Your door is gorgerous. Still a shaker but with a little detail. Will post pictures when I am back home later today when more is done.

Thanks, here is another pic, my doors look a lot like the ones you posted before.

I think that if the door style bothers you now, it will bother you a lot more later. I would bite the bullet and get what I want, not what I was talked into. In my personal opinion, the doors you got look quite dated and heavy.

I personally prefer recessed to raised panels. My 20 year old cabinets have recessed panels and they don't look their age. The raised panel comes across as more traditional and I like more transitional styles. That said, the doors you received do match the style of your house and the cabinets you have in the family room much better, and I've always read on this site to stay true to the style of your home when choosing these things. Unless it was a shaker style door with a little more interest like Sara's above show, I don't think the ones you picked "match" your house as well as what you received.

Remember as well that you're just looking at the cabinets. Once your appliances, countertops, backsplash and personal touches are in, the doors will not be the show. They won't seem as prominent as they are right now because there's nothing else to look at.

Sorry, but shaker IS trending out. In favor of slab doors. “Dated and heavy” suits a heck of a lot of houses better than either shaker or slab.

“Updating” is the Dated Concept. The Landed From Mars Kitchen that forces you to change everything else about your house to make it fit in is the out of date marketing concept. Kitchens shouldn’t be fashion. They are infrastructure.

For me, raised panel doors look very 70 - 80's. The doors I picked for my Spanish style house are detailed, but they have a recessed panel. If the OP is going to pay for new doors, she might want to look for a third option.

I agree that the door you got is a better match with doors flanking your fireplace, but if this happened to me it wouldn't be enough for me to keep them. I'd sooner replace the fireplace cabinets. Raised panels are traditional and would clash with my decor as well as the hardware and fixtures I've chosen for the kitchen. The fact that it's still bothering you means something. Go with your gut. This is your kitchen. You've paid a lot of money to get what you want. Get the door you want.

Some houses have architectural character that locks them into a particular style. But lots of houses are style-less. They are boxes with bolt-on details that can be easily replaced with no loss of aesthetic integrity because the house itself has no particular aesthetic to begin with.

Trend, transitional, traditional and everything else aside I think getting what you like matters more as you will be living with it every day... get the doors you want, the ones you thought you chose... I am doing white marble on the first floor of my house (1400 square feet) throughout soon because that is what I like even though I have been told it is not a good choice, not in style, blah blah blah..

Personally, I much prefer the shaker style as opposed to the raised panel you received (BTW, the shaker doors in the pic you took in the showroom do have a slight bevel to them). Anyway, I think the shaker is a much cleaner look and goes well with your table which I wouldn't consider traditional at all. I usually am the odd man out when it comes to design opinions though :)

Sandra D, do you and your husband remember saying that the door you wanted was the display door? If both of you said that, then I wouldn't be so quick to accept the owner's explanation. Have you both sat down with the owner to go over this, at the exact spot in his shop, it might trigger some memories of what was said.

chispa - Our meeting when we placed the cabinet order was in early May. I usually have a very good memory but that was over 3 months ago. The issue is we talked door style, not door names...but when he wrote up the order he put a door name down...and I failed to double check it when I signed. As I said in my original post I always double check but for some reason I didn't this time. I have made SO many decisions since I started this house renovation (walls were moved, various different kitchen plans, etc etc) it's hard to know 100 pct what happened that day. I appreciate you trying to help though!

    Here are photos from today,

This is the long wall I was concerned about..but as the day has gone on it has grown on me. Installer now working on top trim.

    Island

Start of main wall with sink and dishwasher. Have no idea why these posted sideways. So strange....

Some people love home redecorating...they spend hours on Pinterest, Houzz..this is not me LOL. I am not married to one particular style. I can appreciate a beautiful home if its done tastefully no matter the "style". But flow is important to me.

I walked into a friend's home last week and her kitchen is very modern/white/grey but the rest of her rooms are furnished very traditional. It bothered me as soon as I walked in.

My first floor is an open floor plan. Not a traditional colonial with rooms that have "one way in, one way out".

Just to get a feel for some other rooms on first floor, here is my Dining Room. I know the red paint is dated..I may change it since we just moved a wall and made the room a little smaller but I love this room. Baker and Barbara Barry for Henredon pieces. (you can't see them all). This is an old photo and DR is currently all packed up....

You've got to live with the doors you have for at least a month or two before making such a big decision. Your kitchen guy sounds like the type to give you some time. You're too frazzled and over-thinking this right now.

If you were talking door styles and not names, your seller apparently didn't put down the corresponding name to your choice, or he misunderstood it. Despite the fact that you didn't double check, it seems to me he wasn't clear enough either.

Shaker is not trending out.. according to this sites own research from posts a study for 2018 stated that the Shaker door style is still #1 at 57%, flat panel is at 18% with raised panel at 17% - regardless of this data it really depends on the owners choice...

Shaker style is simple and looks good painted or stained and can be dressed up or down with hardware.
