Your backyard has so much potential. There is one big eyesore that needs to be addressed: the rusty metal roof on the storage building. If it were me, I would get a long handled roller, and some latex paint and paint the storage building the same color as the wall. In addition to improving the looks, it will extend the life of the storage building.

You'll need to create a planting strip (a few feet deep) along the wall, where you can grow some tall, fairly narrow shrubs, or you'll need to erect a tall, extended trellis at the same area on which you can grow screening vines. If you attach a trellis to the wall, it would need to be structurally sound enough to support the weight and wind load of the trellis & plants.

Our utility service provides free shade trees, I was thinking about planting in extra large pots. I tried maple trees and they did not survive. What kind can I maybe plant in large planters without digging into the ground??
