The significant difference is time. The bulbs, if planted this fall, will bloom next season. From seed, expect to wait several years until they develop bulbs of flowering size.

I get most of mine from Fedco. I have also ordered from High Country Gardens and Eden Brothers. I try to source organic seeds and bulbs whenever I can. I planted drumstick allium for the first time this year, and I am completely in love. The bees and other pollinators love alliums. Nodding onion is also lovely. Have fun!

I made the mistake of not controlling garlic chives; so the flip side is that some of the alliums reseed easily and can become invasive. Most generally that would be some of the smaller ones. Some states rank some of them as noxious weeds. So always dead head when they are done blooming before seed can set. Right now I have garlic chives blooming in the cracks of my sidewalks and all over my perennial flower beds. Nice flowers and they cut real well, but they are oh! so fertile!

Typically invasive alliums aren't the ones we grow in gardens (with the exception of the herby type ones..like garlic chives and chives)
