A lot here use an adaptation of Grity mix. I bought stuff that was in my area. I use a adaptation of Als Gritty mix. I could not find all products listed. I use Happy Cat zeolight kitty mix, small Grow stone, pine fines, small clay beads. Had to add a little potting soil to keep it more moist. I use coir as a seed starter. The larger chips just did not hold water fast enough for me.

Yes, I see that after a few years of everyone stressing over sourcing the exact ingredients, availability won out. I've also adapted found ingredients, but coconut coir in smallish chunks, well now!!!...that's new for me =D

I've soaked and then potted up some aeonium cuttings and found that water flies through the coir chunks & the pieces, can be broken easily into smaller chunks by hand...it also dries by the next day. I think, if it's at all possible, that it dries quicker than my current gritty mix of orchiata bark, pumice, chicken grit and aquascaping/planting substrate.

I potted up an Arabicum in just coir and it's pretty happy right now after a rough road trip from Daytona to NY last week.

I must've watered twice since then, and it rained/stormed overnight at some point too. That plant is pushing out new leaves already.

I'm going to continue to experiment with it, maybe I should pot up a random adenium (that also went through the drive) indoors under the fluorescent light to see if it will work for winter.

I'm thinking if it dries out too quickly, I can add scoria or volcanic rock...the size I have is roughly the same size as the coir chunks.

If it dried that quickly here on Long Island, I can only imagine how quickly it must've dried out for you in California!!
