Redoing trim and cabinet repaint, decorating cabinet ends

The white cabinets already painted in these pics need to be redone. I'm thinking of all white, or perhaps grey lowers. Would like to redo the whimpy cheap trim they used. Undecided about the relief carvings - it's dated, but they'd maybe be even more boring without. Refacing not in the budget.

I would like ideas on something not nearly so boring as the blank sides of the end cabinets. Very yawn worthy right now. Perhaps some trim would liven it up? I think the soffits should be the same color as the upper cabinets to lend some height to a pretty short house overall.

The only modifications to the room thus far is track lighting in place of the chandelier, a fridge, and curtains on the windows (swapping for french doors soon). I have another post on DIY asking about ideas for a floating breakfast bar along the wall. Ordered a camera to investigate what's in the bulkhead to be rid of it, but that's a whole other enchilada. TIA!
