Dining Room Help

last modified: 8 years ago

My dining room doesn’t feel right to me. It feels kind of bare. We are about to put in wainscotting and updating the moulding around the windows and doorways. Any suggestions on what I can add or change to get this room more pulled together? I’m also open to ideas for what color to have the yellow table painted. Do I match it to the sideboard? Or go with a color pop? Curtains or white wood inside mounted blinds?

I really like the wood table color...I would change out the console..that piece of furniture really does not complement your table, bench and chairs....if you can’t replace it I would remove it...I would remove the chair rail and paint the entire wall that deep color you have now..is it blue or dark gray?

    It’s SW naval.

Would you recommend adding anything to the walls?

Your chandelier is hung to high, lowering it will help things. I would add a rug (make sure it's large enough) and art on the walls. Remove the small chest by the window. I don't think the table and console clash terribly; I would keep it. This room is very pretty but too predictable. Do something unexpected in regard to the rug and/or the art to make it more interesting. Try a large canvas of modern art behind the console instead of something pretty.

The runner does not go with the formality of the settee or the chandelier. The yellow table is too short so the color doesn't matter. Look for a large interesting piece of art.

Hi, I think that the room looks beautiful! I actually don't think you need to add anything other than maybe a rug under the table. It should be large enough for all of the chairs to be on it as well.

Here's a rug that I think would look really nice:

Black and Blue Peshawar Ziegler Rug- more info.

Hope this could help a little, but I honestly think that all your missing is a rug!

A dark black rug really is not what this dark Navy blue room needs!

Agree that the chandelier may need to be lowered..it should be no higher than 32” from top of table to bottom of chandelier ( do not include crystal drop when measuring).

You do have a assortment of pieces that just are not complementing each other...the little yellow chest is super cute but does not work on that wall and really is to small to place in this space...would work well in a entry or as a end table or nightstand...I do love the color!

I think the room is lacking identity....the chandelier is formal contemporary but the console and lanterns are country/farmhouse.....navy blue walls are giving a more traditional look with the white chair rail....

what are you hoping to achieve in the style?

    Some inspiration...

Thank you all so much for your ideas and feedback! I’m going to move the yellow chest out of the room. The yellow chest was purposed as a record player stand. Any ideas of what I could bring in to put the record player on? Or should I move the record player into the living room (which is next to the dining room)? I tried putting it on the sideboard and it just didn’t work.

I should probably add that wainscotting is slated to be added to the room at the end of next month.

I love the contrast between the chandelier shade and the navy walls. I’ll contact the manufacturer about getting more chain so we can lower the chandelier. I brought this chandelier with us from our previous home and think that the rest of the chain didn’t make it with us during the move.

Home Interiors with Ease, the Dear Lillie dining room that you posted has actually been my inspiration. :) That is how I came up with the table, bench, king louis chair combo. My husband loves the jade chairs. He things that they are the most comfortable chairs that he has ever sat in.

The room seems bland to me and that it is missing pop and flow. These ideas all help so much!

I would like to see an area rug and a framed mirror over the buffet. I would take the little yellow piece of furniture out. Add some draperies.

I think those few things would make a big difference.

I should probably mention that the living room and dining room open up to one another. The living room doubles at the kid’s play room with a sectional and piano. I have a massive mirror above the couch. The dining room is to the left and the sideboard shares the same wall as the couch and the massive mirror. Could I still put another mirror above the sideboard? Or is that too much? (This room needs a little work and more green in it. The rug was temorarily removed before our family party last weekend.)

I'm not sure why I like mirrors in the dining room. I think two might be a bit much though. Maybe move that one to the dining room (if the sizing works) and then add a few framed photos above the sofa?

I love your dining room pieces btw. I not a huge fan of matching sets, so it's right up my alley.

Add one or two green, naval blue + pumpkin (?) pillows to the living room. Nice space. Can you get two more jade chairs for the dining room?

The wainscoting of white IMO breaks up the dark wall color for contrast. Pretty color. Can you take a photo during the day? Curious about the day view. Your space needs texture rather it be in window treatments, rug, fabric on chairs and or art work. Metals like in photo on left as wall sconces would bring in a different material. New buffet with lamps possibly and mirror. Once it is completed it will come together. Good luck.

Tqtqtdw, I can get more jade chairs. Where would I put them?

Jodie, what kind of window treatments and rug would you recommend? Sheer, linen or patterned curtains?

Barnes Custom Builders, thanks for your kind words and ideas! It looks like the mirror is longer than my sideboard. Do you think something like this would work? Or is it too many mirrors with the long mirror above the sofa?

I’m working on the same thing. I can’t get my DR together either. I’m thinking of putting in a niche sort of like this on the long bare wall.

Oh love that huge mirror I would move it into the dining room..and get art for the sofa wall to add some green into that room over the sofa...I think you could do drapes in a pattern like what I posted or a light neutral linen..if keeping the wainscoting add a white pottery collection onto the middle of the table..to make it more cohesive......yes move that cute yellow chest into the LRoom for your record player.......if you want a runner instead of running long run it across the middle of the table and wider..this is common in more farmhouse style rooms. I would stick with a neutral rug but something textured to keep it from looking to formal. If you keep the console/buffet paint the top White and maybe think about adding wall lights.

For now, try switching the bench with the jade chairs. They will stand out more with the console behind them. The bench and will balance the console a bit by being on the other side of the table. Love the color of your walls. You've got a great start on this room!

Since the settee is small, I would consider changing it out for two more jade chairs.

Just a small tweak , I would put the two chairs on the side with the buffet and move the bench to the other side. I feel the need to peak around the bench, to see whats there,,,, the chairs will let you see it.

Many options to go with depending on your taste. Inspiration above for rug and simple drapery panels in style like the orange pattern but in a color that harmonizes with rug walls and furnishings. Artwork over furniture or a mirror. I visualize something chic yet casual for this dining space. Post after photos when you finalize. Did not see any ideabooks to work with so I just picked a few things to pull together one look. Have fun with it and best of luck.

The head chairs and buffet look to be Italianate while the yellow chest is French and the Jade chairs remind me of slipper chairs, and the settee is just too busy to add to the mix. If you are attempting eclectic, you have a good start, but I think you actually want transitional.

Love the fresh citrus feel you have on the table. Maybe compliment it with a citrus tree in the corner such as a meyer lemon, or calamondin? Good luck!

We think adding window treatments that are white, and either a mirror or artwork over the sideboard will help tremendously.
