It would be useful to see the entire floor plan to help you gain more usable room. From what I see I'd eliminate the single step across the veranda. With that gone I could move the entrance inboard some to allow space for a closet or bench against the outside wall. . . . . . I'd like to open the area I see as a large room with a double door entrance to the side of the hall. Options include some wall removal which would eliminate the need for doors. This creates space by including the hall. But a full plan is necessary to go forward with that.

This home has a good amount of space. It's currently divided into separate rooms. If you did the engineering and the removal of wall was within a remodel budget you could create a good open concept space.

Moving the entrance and possibly the window without adding the two steps would be a first option.
