Santa Claus Melon

Randy's melon looks like it has a smooth rind, unless the image is deceiving. The Santa Claus is very wrinkled, warty.

are you sure you intentionally planted it ... which would make it a named variety ....

rather than seed that may have come out of the compost pile??? ... where it might be some genetic unknown cross???

That’s a good point. The only thing that I planted in that area are watermelon, cantaloupe and green beans. No compost pile for me.. I do recall that i planted one or two vegatable plants from a place that sells Philipino veggies (like bitter Mellon, but I did not buy that). I think it was a muskmellon from them, or at least labeled that.

So I did some research on this and I’m thinking it’s actually a Vietnamese Melon..

The Vietnamese dưa gang is eaten for its quenching quality during the summer but the taste is quite bland and the texture tends to be an unappealing mush when ripe. Vietnamese eat it chilled and sprinkled with sugar. It can also be put in a blender along with crushed ice and condensed milk, and pulsed into a frothy smoothie. While still green and crunchy, it's also used like a vegetable, cooked, stir-fried, pickled, brined, or shredded in a salad. On the western palate it's too bland to be eaten as an "as-is" melon.
