My visitor today

Aside from the usual fox, groundhog, chipmunk, turkey, turkey vulture, hawk, deer and rabbit visitor, I found this guy in my side yard. I think he (she?) is an Eastern Ribbon snake. I live in NJ and this guy was about 2 feet long. Picture in comment. I welcome any correction or further info.

Everything has to eat. That is why Mother Nature makes many multiples of some creatures.

The snake I know as a ribbon snake has more distinct stripes. Without looking it up, I think that is a garter snake. There used to be one like that by my pond. I saw him so often, I gave him a name....Fancy Pants...because he looked checkered.

Marilyn, I think you’re right. Earlier in the day any garter snake pix did not look like my guy, but I just found some that look exactly like this guy. He was very pretty with an almost checkered look between the stripes. I know we have some venemous rattlesnakes around here, but I knew this guy wasn’t one of those.

COOL!! OP: we have the same assortment of wildlife... i saw a snake once in my yard about 5 years ago, haven't seen any since :(

To compare this was a garter snake in my garden last spring summer. This was a nice warm spot full of compost with my tomato seedlings for cover. They are fun find but I did worry it might eat my frogs and toads.

Frogged, your guy looks chubbier than mine. I suspect mine is a juvie. I hope he hangs around. We do have tree frogs and bullfrogs.

A couple of days ago as I was working on a project in our new barn, I picked up a junction box from a horizontal beam in one stall and immediately behind it was a small Black Rat snake. I yelped in surprise, and dropped the junction box, nearly hitting the our sleeping cat. The snake just stayed there and seemed to be curiously watching me as I installed and hooked up the junction box

i like snakes... as long as they are eating mice/rats and don't come springing out at me. one day, at school, kids were hauling in bags of equipment from whatever they were doing outside in PE. as one boy was putting bag into closet he says... "Look... a snake!". no major commotion but i cautiously went over to take a look. it was probably no longer than a pencil and not even that fat. it slowly eases up over lip of closet door and went into hiding. PE teacher had to find kids to help him take EVERYTHING out of that closet in order to find the critter and send it back home outside.
