Hallway and kitchen rug placement

We just put in hardwood floors and are about to start shopping for rugs.
What's the best set up for an entry and hallway? Should we get a small rug to go in front of the front door and then two runners for the hallway? There is a curve after the double doors which may make finding one long rug difficult.
For the Kitchen, would small separate small rugs in front of the sink and range look better than one long rug?
Which type of rugs are best for hardwood floors? Any favorite brands?
