Carrie Mango Problems

My Carrie Mango sapling is having issues. I received it bare root and planted it in 50% coco noir, 20% sphangnum peat moss, 20% compost, and 10% earthworm castings. I made the mistake of putting it directly in the sun on a 110 degree heat wave and the top leaves burned almost completely after 2-3 days. So I moved it into morning only sun and it has not progressed. But, either has any growing of the plant. After 3 weeks, horns/spikes appeared at the top. But they turn brown and fall off it seems. The spikes look like very narrow, thick, and brittle leaves. Anyone else have experience with this?
