Agree with the others that your inspiration pick and actual house are on opposite ends of the spectrum. However, you could still replace all of your white siding with natural wood....

Sorry, your second option isn’t any better. Like Beth and Sophie (the Pros) said, you have completely the wrong house to do siding like that. There is no element of your house that is modern.

no to the other design. A and P,,you can't make your home into modern. not without some major structural reworking. you have a traditional split level w/brick and siding. What you are doing w/that wood design is something that belongs on a square, completely modern type of abode. you can't do wacky geometrics on your home the way it currently sits!

replace all your siding w/wood, paint your brick, and bring in some diff garage doors.

@A and P - stop throwing wood color on your house randomly it’s not going to work.. replace current siding with wood and paint the brick a light cream color to pick up the warmth of the wood tone.. or any color for that matter & change the color of the shutters and window frames as well.. :-)

@A and P - Why do you even want to do this? What will you get out of it? You must have other home projects that are more worthy to spend your money and time on.

No to either of those drawings for sure.Maybe something like this would be doable but it will cost no matter what you choose to do . Your house will never have the same feel as the inspiration so don’t try .

Maybe you should think about selling and moving. Or doing a teardown. You have bought the wrong house for your wants.

Now, for your needs for shelter and a place for your family to gather, it may fit those.

But you have to turn off the TV and stop believing that $1.98 and zero design talent can make a split level into a Contemporary. It’s barely possible with that 100K budget to rip it apart and redo it’s face with new makeup.

Or, adjust those wants to realistic needs.

Sophie's right. If you are unhappy with the style of your home, you have two choices: 1) sell and move or 2) rebuild it.

Its true, our tastes change over time. To satisfy your desire for a completely different style, take a look at what is available in your area. Maybe it's time to move. Or after you look, you see that the move isn't (or is) worth the money and time.

Don't try to change this into something it isn't though...it will hurt you in the both the short and long run.

First and foremost, wow people are opinionated! It sounds like you’re just asking for help, not to be criticized. Second - I think you can absolutely update your home! I would start with the garage door, consider splurging on something aluminum with panels. What do you think about increasing the size of your front entry, and adding a poured in concrete wall? Along with an updated guard rail? Then add the natural wood that your wife likes above and below the windows and possibly around the door. Depending on your budget you can also increase your window size...Followed by a new coat of paint, funky concrete spears in the garden, and dramatic flower pots flanking the front door. Bottomline you are on the right track, keep brainstorming, and trust your gut.

Those ideas are actually like rebuilding the house the bottom one could be doable but we have no idea of the budget so hard to make actual changes to the house without knowing that.

It’s just not going to happen! For starters, consider the roofline of your home compared to the inspiration photo. You’re looking at a major project. And you also must consider how it will look in the neighborhood. There’s a lot you can do to make the house more attractive without ripping it apart - front porch, garage doors, landscaping, etc. Start looking for inspiration from homes that are similar to yours - there’s so much you can do with what you have to make it very appealing.

Before covering the bricks, you should check the city code. Where, I live it is not allowed.

@Suedonim75 - I live in the Province of Québec (Canada). If we want to replace the bricks, we either have to leave a certain amount (can’t remember how much) or, it can be replaced by something similar that has the same value but not wood or siding :(

@retraite- I'm assuming the homes in your area are historic and/or have attractive brick work opposed to 1960/70 tract homes with a strip of ugly brick?

I can see why they wouldn't want it covered by cheap siding.

It will be easier to get your home to this appearance then to try to turn it into a MCM style with the wood.

From your own pics and ideas you seem to want to tone down the expanse of white. Start there. Choose a different siding, color, window trim, garage door. Your home is fine. Tweak it. Don’t throw it off a cliff.
