Help with support post acceptance and planning

We are remodeling our kitchen and taking down a wall that extends and divides our kitchen in half between the appliances and eating and sitting space. After consulting an engineer it seems that the beam replacing that wall has to extend 24 feet and cannot be recessed because it has to run underneath another beam already in the ceiling. The way the kitchen cabinets are designed in a our new plan, means the beam would run through the cabinets. It would also mean we would have to add additional support in basement, digging and filling with cement to provide another post. All this because of one stupid 9 foot wall. The costs are mounting dramatically. If we leave the post, which supports the weight, after we tear the wall down, it will be in a fairly good location, because it will not be in the traffic pattern or interfere with the large new island. Our kitchen designer thinks we will not notice it after the kitchen is finished. I would love to hear opinions on leaving the post and living with it. We are really trying to be sensible about this.

just a philosophical observation: Often the thing you think is a flaw can actually become a focal point.

Leave the post and fugetaboudit. You've got plenty of expenses coming; this one ain't worth it, I promise.

Thank you, accepting the post would save thousands of dollars and we are already way over budget on or wish list.

The yellow half wall is coming down. The post would be at the end. 10 x 4 island is going to be where that table is. Breakfast bar coming out. Cabinets are being replaced and additional cabinets added across from breakfast bar against wall. To the left of the picture, in front of the couch is a kitchen table and chairs. I hope this makes sense.

Hope this shows more of the detail. It is the yellow half wall that is coming down. Post would be at the inside end of that wall.

Location of the post is very clear to you because you know your space but maybe not so clear to some of us....well, me at least. Are you saying that the post is going to be at the end of the 9 foot wall by the sitting area window???

If that is the case, why make it a post? How far would the post be from the outer wall? I think framing out the post to make a short wall would be better than a post...but maybe you mean at the other end of the current 9 foot wall???

A floor plan would really help. Showing the proposed kitchen layout including the island and the post.

What beautiful scenery you have out your windows!

Thank you for the compliment about the scenery. We live in a very wooded lot and in the summer it is darker and cooler in the kitchen until afternoon. In the winter it is very sunny all afternoon with lovely sunsets in the evening. We face west. I will try to draw a sketch of the plan.

I will draw this tonight. Basically the post would be at 9 feet in from the back by the windows in a 24 by 24 foot room. While it is almost at the center of room, designer tells me that it will not be in the flow of the traffic, because it will be behind the chair at the island with sufficient space to get in and out of chair. Does that make sense?
