Local weatherman calling it "Fogust"!

I'm liking the cool, but that makes my hot peppers cool too! Thankfully we had enough heat in Danville to mature the grapefruit.

I'm in Petaluma, same here. No ripe tomatoes, but personally I enjoy the cooler days and the moister air. Wonder what winter will be like...

Wow, we've had a very hot summer here in San Diego. A couple of weeks of crazy 100's followed by a month of daily temps in the 90s. Recently it's been a bit lower, closer to normal highs.

Lucky you to get a Fogust. SoCal was horribly hot for weeks without relief.

Ours here in Santa Rosa was pretty good. Not so hot like last year! A few foggy days this week, but back up starting today.

We're in a new place in town rather than out in the boon docks. Figured out a little 10x20 area for veges and have been VERY surprised and pleased with our results!

Our hottest time is usually Aug-Oct.. Time to go to the beach when the kids go back to school! Nancy

I am LOVING it,but only the last week or so. Before that, this part of the area was plenty hot.

Bay Area Microclimates

Can't believe I've been able to pull off these beans I started late June!

The inner bay area was nothing like the rest east and south. July was nice..a run of 80f and change for 3 weeks. Since then? 70's. Low 70's mostly.

I think the climate change is more in less frost and so far no difference in summers here.

I see. I had to look that up. Is that the same as " inner East Bay"?

This micrclimate stuff is faascinating to me. Something about air sucking in and out in cycles through breaks in the mountains. Like when you open an oven. And I live in the oven!

To me,once you go past the low hills of the Caldicott past Berkeley,OR go over the Sunol grade near Hayward? You've left the cooler,moisture inner bay area climate and are in that zone of not as hot as the central valley...but much warmer then the inner bay area.

Although people close to the Golden Gate think the mid bay to San Jose is a hot summer climate!

here in west twin peaks area of SF, I am still wearing fleece shirts, its 65-68 degrees high temp, no sun just high clouds and fog, the pea pods love it, and italian sweet peppers are slow not as prolific, i have a few parsnips , no flowers the rosebuds are just lumps of moldy petals,powdery mildew are doing just great, lol.

Babka - Small world! I grew up with Chicago area humidity too! I don’t miss that awful weather at all. No AC for me either and I don’t mind at all. Like you it’s only a few days a year that it‘d be nice to have AC but if we open all windows at night and close up the house before it warms, we are quite comfortable.

I moved to California in 1963, arriving in California on Nov 21. I started my new job in Berkeley the next day, on November 22, the day President Kennedy was assassinated. A never to be forgotten day! I’ve been in my present house in the mid-Peninsula since 1973.

I love California and can happily put up with a cooler summer than is normal. In my case, it’s our figs that don’t seem to ripen to their usual sweetness. I’m wondering how our persimmons will turn out this year.

My persimmons look to be behind schedule. The tomatoes were WAY behind schedule, to the point where I've gotten about 1/2 what I usually do. Lettuce is doing great, though...

We havent had a single 80f in September. Last year we hit 108f..out hottest temp ever.

My tomatoes called it a day months ago. My Mango tree started like I was going to have a bumper crop? Shed fruit heavily and what it kept were half the size of last years. Tasty but small.

Its not even been foggy..just cool and sunny.

I will say..great summer for my shady backyard and ferns and related plants..they held lush all over summer on average watering from me. My dry plants in front?..again,some watering but nothing compared to most or all other summers past. I never had to fight off a single 90f or more day.

My perennial bed pooped out a month earlier than usual. My Echinaceas are done. So are the Agastache. Even the Heleniums are mostly over. Everything feels and looks like fall already. It feels odd.

Here I am inland from most of you Fairfield) and it was a hot summer! My tomatoes are just now really starting to turn red - and they were planted in April. Too many hot days in the 90s and 100s this summer. To me, it's very comfortable now 80s.

Same here, @clarkejpz. Here is a watermelon I started late June.

I couldn't have a normal veggie garden this summer due to house renovations, but I still had a volunteer sungold give a few tasty sweet tomatoes on the mid peninsula. Our passion fruit vine took over about 80 feet of our yard. It is really evasive, so it clearly didn't miss the heat. Lots of fruit on our persimmon... it seems normal for this time of year. Also our lamb hass tree and rocoto pepper tree really took off. There is one area where there are passion fruits, peppers, and persimmons all intertwined.

I love the cool summers. Coming from Atlanta originally, they are wonderful. My ideal outdoor temperature is 66, and I hate tropical weather... this summer was perfect for me even if it makes some things harder to grow. I hope last summer was just a freak occurrence. We decided at the last minute to add AC to our renovation just in case it wasn't.
