The most frequent complaint I see about ductless A/C is that installers still charge a lot for what appears to be a relatively simple job for an HVAC company. People find a ductless system online for reasonable price, and then find out it will cost much more than they expected to install it.

There are also a lot of variables and choices in the newer mini-split systems, so you want a contractor who can give you the right advice. For example, some have an option for some type of ducting and can use more standard looking HVAC registers, and many are designed to allow multiple interior cooling heads to be connected to a single outside unit.

Mitsubishi now have a plug-and-play, DIY ductless minisplit system. Check out their website. They start at about $1600.
