How about adding a place to store the wood on the right side to even it out? Can you add a built in cubby to store logs?

I like your materials. That larger space to the left is a perfect place for a unique set of fireplace tools;)

Can't burn logs in this fireplace. When completed it will have the glass or rock fire look. Although I like idea of cubby it is right where the gas line is and we were hoping not to have to move it. Thanks!!

Finish under the mantel as one unit…which it is. Do not put anything on the mantel, as that exacerbates the "off".

If you are dealing with asymmetry, avoid symmetrical placement of decorative objects on the mantel because it draws attention to the asymmetry. Instead, arrange objects to the right, ending in about the middle.

I like your idea of bringing attention to the mantel, to distract from the asymmetrical firebox and tv, especially with a dark surface material, but caution against adding objects onto the top of the mantel after you have emphasized the shape itself. Placing the fire tools on the right makes sense functionally and there are so many choices! Even if you cannot create a firebox because of the gas line, you could stack wood horizontally in front of the fireplace -- Perhaps you could find a wine rack that would hold small logs, six high, rather than wine bottles, or simple create a shallow box four " deep into which you could place your 'logs'. A shallow oval container in metal could work. You could use any container that fits for anything that is used for a fire. We do not use our fireplace, and I have the same four birch logs year round nestled on an attractive metal rack. Look for firestarters in gift catalogs or home stores. Or make your own from cardboard and twine.

My vote is for those pretty white stacked stone mosaic tiles (left side of your picture. Have you priced that out? Curious because it might be something I use as well.

Finish the entire area below the mantel consistently and take the tile all the way to the edge of the firebox. If you can swing the cost, a completely solid surface would be sweet.

I would suggest covering the tiled surround with a wood frame and painting it the same colour as your walls. Leave the mantel as it is as it would be overpowering in a dark colour. Then find a large ornament, vase etc to place on the floor next to the fireplace for balance.
