Whoa! That's a half-a-day PITA to dust. And a lot of owwies for small children and klutzy adults.

OK maybe for a commercial building with janitorial staff but I sure wouldn't want it in my home.

Mistake is what you call it. Or bad design. Or porcupine. Or any one of a dozen other negative descriptions. It’s gawdawful.

I join the chorus. This design is tremendously impractical, even more so outdoors than indoors. And it looks kind of hostile aesthetically. I recommend using a wood column instead.

How do you think this looks like flaoting, a column will always look like one and there are many ways to cover it . This look might work on a huge commercial building but not a regular home.

i like it better for outside than inside, you can take a garden hose to it.

no idea what you would call it. i cant say whether it would look good or not without seeing the house it would be part of, and the scale of the plates : column.

Hmm. Annular rustication? I forget. Anyhow, it's great insect habitat.

In that case, I can see a larger scale, less intricate version of that banded column working nicely in an overall contemporary or Asian influenced design. It doesn't read as 'floating' to me but I haven't seen the design.

Specific to the photo posted, I did not like it as an interior finish, was annoyed by what I consider the misuse of a whole of expensive walnut(?), the safety factor, the amount of labor required to build it and the PITA it would be to re-paint. Plus being out-scale for the room in the pix. And The Dusting.

If you could accept the lines going the other direction you could use something like this.
