Could you open up the landing on the main floor, but still design a hallway and door in the basement? You can keep it open most of the time, but can then have some sound control when needed.

Growing up in the 60's I had a friend with a great house! Instead of an inland in the center of the kitchen, the lower cabinets where in a wide U shape with a set of wide open stairs in the center, going down to the basement rec/game room, spare bedroom, TV room, and bathroom. We kids played there every winter, all winter long. I remember running up the steps when his Mom called us for fresh cookies at the bar that was on one side of the U.

Top of stairs leads to foyer which is next to great room. Bottom of stairs would open to what will be a bar area. A TV viewing area will be next to the bar area. More of a open space if you will.

I can't keep the door where it is now as we want to put double doors looking into the bedroom so we can get all the daylight from the egress window. I don't want that door shown opening up directly in front a wall and next to a another door.

We can ether blow out the doorway and that wall all the way back to the support beam or we'd make a new open in that wall next to where the black fridge is. But it feels odd to come down the stairs and have to turn to a doorway.

Whaas...our finished basement was totally open to the first floor in our last house with an attractive open staircase. It was inviting and pretty. But when our teen boys were watching a movie in the basement with their buddies we were yelling at them to turn down the volume constantly. Drove us batty.

This new house also has a finished basement with entertainment area that we expect will see a lot of use (while we are upstairs). We thought about a door at the bottom of the stairway but decided instead to have a door at the top of the stairway. No open stairway (at the top) this time. But it is open at the bottom, if that makes sense.
