How to remove old style vent diffuser

We are laying down laminate in our home and have some older style diffusers for the HVAC vents. They have been painted over many times it seems, but even after chipping away much of the paint, we are struggling to figure out how to remove them. Any advice? Is it even possible to remove these?

Are the top and the front a single piece or two? Either way, it is held by built in clips. You lift or pry it vertically, starting at one end and working your way towards the other, until it is free of the clips. Then rotate it away at the bottom. If they are one piece, you'll need to first cut through the accumulated paint at the back of the top.
