Has Anyone Grown Quicksilver?

I came upon this rose, strictly by accident (ahem) and since this is another tall rose, a climber actually, and since it is purple, I decided I had to have it. I don't have anything close to this color and it's time I left my pink-and-more-pink rut. I'm ordering it from Northland Rosarium. The shipping is only a dollar less than the rose but that's how it rolls these days.

Does anyone have this rose? If so, I'd love to hear all about it.

I do not have this rose, but have been going back and forth between it and Lavender Crush. I'm wanting something that will look good with Violet's Pride, so I'm anxious to here what everyone says. There was a long post this Spring which I'll see if I can find. Chamblees also carries it, I believe.

Yes, I saw it first at Chamblee's, but I believe Northland Rosarium sends out larger roses which is why I bought it from there. Smaller roses don't survive here any more and I don't have the energy to pot things up the way I should so they go in the ground and hopefully make it.

I looked at previous posts and Quicksilver was there, with even some pictures, and I think it might do quite well for me, nice and tall and sturdy. It looks as though it could stand some rabbit pruning and still grow and bloom.

I know what you mean, Ingrid. I just found my baby Aunt Margy's Rose half eaten presumably by a rabbit. I put a cage my husband made on it now, after the fact of course. I wish I knew who the next victim might be so I could prevent this.

Makes total sense Ingrid! I just didn't know if you'd seen that but you're an old hat at this not like me. I guess I should check out what Northland sells. I was going to put in an order for this fall thinking I could grow them up for a month or two here and then I could put them in my garage over the winter. I don't know if that gets me much ahead for the spring I'm just afraid they won't have it then.

Ingrid, I wish I could tell you all about Quicksilver, since I did purchase one. I potted it up into larger and larger pots, since it was a band when I purchased it, and it was going into a difficult spot. I’m afraid it didn’t survive my trip out of town during our first horrendous heatwave. It wasn’t due to it being a weak rose, but to the boys not giving it water while I was away. Sorry that I can’t be of more help. Lisa

I planted this rose unfortunately too late this spring, in a too hot spot and sadly it died. However, it bloomed wonderfully before it got too hot here and I loved the blooms. I really liked this rose and will probably buy another if I can find a place to put it that doesn't get reflected heat. Lovely color. Good luck with it and don't get discouraged by my experience. The rose was getting too much west sun which is the kiss of death here.

Flowers, That is gorgeous and so petal packed. The blooms look huge--are they? I love the color, too. Diane

Diane, I know you're out of space, but if a place opens up, this is one you would like. The blooms are a good 4" and the fragrance is about medium for me, although many on the forums here say they detect no scent. The color is not as pink as the photos. My phone takes very vivid pics and I usually have to tone the color down a bit.

I planted Quicksilver in the spring to climb my garden shed and it's already reached the top and growing over it. :) It seems very healthy and happy.

First picture was earlier in the summer and the second one is right now. It's blooming again.

Ingrid- I planted ‘quicksilver’, ’lavendar crush‘ and ‘le petit prince’ this spring. They are too new for me to make a judgement, but ‘quicksilver‘ seems vigorous and disease free so far.

Oh man! These gorgeous pictures make me so sad that mine was forgotten while I was out of town. It wasn’t entirely the boys fault for not watering it, as I had it tucked away and failed to mention where it was when I gave them watering instructions. I haven’t thrown the pot away, hoping it still has some life left in its roots. Sadly, its not looking good. I’m glad your getting this one, Ingrid. If it does well for you, I will replace mine someday. The blooms were a wonderful color, I DID detect some fragrance on the blooms from my tiny plant, and they were large and petal packed. I purchased it to grow on the other side of my arch, opposite Lady Ashe. By now Lady Ashe and the clematis Roguchi, have grown large enough to provide Quicksilver with some afternoon shade. If mine hadn’t met its demise, I would be planting it in a month or two. It’s a real beauty, and I know you’re going to love it. Lisa

Thank you so much for these gorgeous photographs and the benefit of your experiences. I'll be sure to plant it where it gets afternoon shade, and will make every effort not to leave town! I'm very excited about this rose because it will be the most spectacular one in my garden by far, and I haven't had a lavender/purple rose in my garden for quite some time except for my rabbit-cropped International Herald Tribune. My garden and I need a pick-me-up and this should do it. I'm so excited!

I have 2 own root and 1 grafted QS. They are lovely climbers with a nice lavender color. More of a true lavender than Poseidon the other more grey blue toned lavender climber. Quicksilver's blooms are often quartered and especially gorgeous when they take on that form.

Thank you for starting this thread, Ingrid! Quicksilver is one I have been very interested in but waiting for some feedback. The color is spectacular!

SJN - Do the blooms hold up in the heat?

Flowersaremusic - Is it cane hardy for you?

Yes, Dave, Quicksilver is cane hardy here and almost tip hardy with no protection. I will give you my 2 cents worth on your other question because it was right at 100˚ all summer, getting up to 109˚ and Quicksilver was one of the few that continued blooming, although maybe a little less, and the blooms didn't decrease in size more than just a smidge. My last two pics above were taken during the heat.

flowers, thank you for your input about Quicksilver's heat tolerance. I have to say I'm surprised that a lavender/purple rose would have that kind of heat tolerance. It's so heartening to know that the flowers hold up well and don't decrease much in size in the heat. I'm beginning to wish I had ordered several more!

Ingrid, I hope it proves to be a good rose in your climate and that you love it. Since it's relatively new, I don't think we know how it performs over time, but so far, it's a good one. I'm at the place in life where I want roses that work instead of me doing the work to keep them happy.

Dave, Quicksilver's blooms do hold up in my heat -but it is humid heat. It rains several times a week during our summers. We do get up into the 90'sF and a few times a summer, 100F. All my roses slow down production a little in the summer but pick back up in the fall.

Desert heat is more brutal on plants due to less humdity but all my roses actually did better when I lived in desert areas than here as long as I could keep them watered lol.

flowers, I'm at that exact same place, roses that work are what it's all about. I'm exited that such a beautiful rose with a color I love should also be easy to care for. I'll be sure to give it all the water it needs here, but other than that and a covering of leaf mulch I really can't manage much more.

sultry jasmine, you're right about roses in desert areas (which is pretty much what my garden has become in the last few years) doing well when watered since diseases are not as prevalent as in humid heat. Not as many destructive bugs either, thank goodness.

Totally agree, Ingrid. Roses that bloom, prosper, and don't shrivel in the hot, dry air are "all" I ask for. Many have praised the rose Heirloom as an excellent lavender. I grew it for three years and never saw a decent bloom if it remained more than 3 hours on the plant. I do love that we also have fewer destructive insects by far in this desert. Of course, thrips are here, but that's about all.

Here is my Quick Silver, own root, still in 5-gallon pot because I haven't found a place for it yet and it amazes me with many flowers, good repeat and very healthy. Trying to post the full bush shot but houzz won't let me. Wonder what their developers are doing instead of fixing these persistence problems. Helen

Diane, I also had Heirloom, and loved the one good bloom it had. It had afternoon shade and still shriveled in record time, just an hour or two. Needless to say it didn't stay, but I can't wait for Quicksilver to arrive and bloom.

Helen, those blooms are gorgeous! If I can have anything near that I'll be in rose heaven. Thanks so much for posting. I just can't get enough of seeing this rose.

Those blooms are, indeed, perfectly gorgeous, Helen and Ingrid. I'd love to find some space for Quick Silver, and a source for a five gallon plant. My favorite local nursery has many five gallons, but they don't carry any of the latest Kordes roses. It's strange since they offer hundreds of other roses.

Helen, I had more Houzz problems yesterday. The worst was a few days ago, when Houzz Wrecker froze a thread while I was trying to post; then wouldn't let me leave the thread. I had to shut down my browser. Diane

I received my rose yesterday, in a much larger than usual band pot, it's probably a quart pot, and will be planting it in the ground in a day or two. Of course you know that as soon as it has a bloom you'll be seeing it here!

Bayarea_girl, I was very happy, thrilled even, with my Quicksilver until I looked at your pic. WHAT do you feed yours for Pete's sake?

I got mine in 2016 own root from Rose Unlimited so it's about 2-year own root but it's a great rose. I put it in a 5-gallon pot while trying to find a spot for it and the poor thing develops roots through the drainage holes of the 5-gallon pot to gets more nutrition from the ground and that's what happened :) I don't have any sunny location left for a climber so I still working on finding a good spot for it. My husband always points to it as an example of how I have too many roses and won't have enough time to care for more roses, LOL. Helen

I'm surprised it does that well in a pot. Yours is the same age as mine. I've never had that many blooms at once. My husband finally gave up about too many roses. Give your husband time. He'll figure it out.
