?need for reinforced ceiling for heavy bath

I've chosen a touchstone bath weighing 100kg and my builder to!d me I need a reinforced ceiling. Is this right?

    we have no idea what the specs are of wherever you're putting this tub.

    but if its super heavy, then it stands to reason you don't want it crashing through the ceiling. do you question your builder on other things too?

    Agreed, it's a complicated question and a lot more info would be needed for a definitive answer, but it's possible. I ran into a similar problem when I fell in love with a gorgeous tub. The tub weighed 400lbs itself, held 100 gallons of water (that's over 800lbs), and then whoever's sitting in the tub. My contractor said we'd need to reinforce the floor and put a support post in the room below. I went with a different tub!

    Oh, this brings back 1970's memories. People bought waterbeds with NO thought to the carrying capacity of their floors. It didn't take long before landlords & condo boards banned them. The photos of collapsed ceilings, and sometimes the floor joists!, were terrifying.

    chiflipper,,,lol. I had one of those beds. but I had a one story home, on a cement slab, so was never an issue. can't believe I slept on one of those for 10+ years!

    Code compliant floors do not collapse from the weight of waterbeds, tubs, refrigerators, or a room full of partying dancers. No reinforcements required.

    Joseph, that is patently false. Structural engineer here - residential floors are not designed to handle the loads imposed by a group of dancing people. To the OP, it is entirely possible that your builder is concerned about excessive deflection of the floor when fully loaded with water and a bather leading to cracking in tiles, grout, drywall or plaster on the ceiling below. When we built a kitchen addition last year we reinforced the floor below our large kitchen island (by reducing the joist spacing to 12” centres instead of 16” centres). Our builder floated it as an idea and my husband and I immediately agreed (we are both structural engineers, but we don’t do base building design - we work with structural glass and facade engineering).

    !00kg is 220 lbs. A lot of men weigh far more more than that. Are you saying you don't think your second floor would hold five or six of those men standing /stacked and lying close together? lmao. Sorry. Put the tub perpendicular to the joists if you're paranoid?

    I think your builder isn't wild about hauling the objet of your desire UP there. That's what I think.

    Accusing someone of being "patently false" requires substantiation. Perhaps you could find a single case where a forensic investigation of a residential floor collapse, built to modern building code, resulted in "Shouldn't have had Sumo wrestlers dancing to the Pointer Sisters all night" in the final report as casual.


    No commercial, and hillbilly deck failures, unfortunately all to common, are excluded.

    Touché Joseph. Residential floors are not likely to collapse under a dancing crowd. They may, however deflect excessively as indicated in the rest of my post.
