It is a Dicentra - Bleeding heart. It is likely one of the hybrids since the foliage is not finely cut enough to be the species D. formosa. If you are really lucky it will be D. 'Luxuriant'.

Yes, it’s definitely Geranium robertianum. Sniff it. Quite a pong. Native here but a self sowing weed in my garden.

Seldom do I not use the word possibly or perhaps when giving an ID. I should have in this case because I believe Carol is correct. I did not notice the fuzzy stems at first.

Depending on where one is located, this could be considered a weed or a wildflower. Here, it is a weed and is listed on our noxious weed/invasive species list. Wherever one is located, I would never consider this be an acceptable groundcover!!

And if you do put your finger on it it will smell like the plant afterward.

Thanks everyone! I thought it was a species of bleeding heart too as it looks similar to ones I have but yet it was different so I wasn't sure. I looked up Geranium robertianum and yes definitely looks like that.

I was going to plant this on a small/isolated parking strip/boulevard/hellstrip (~4 x 2ft). The strip is already full of weeds - I thought I'd pull out what's there and plant this as well as periwinkle, but having read the comments in this thread I'm re-considering.

And it only looks pretty when young. Later it’s a scraggly mess of seed pods and scruffy stems.

I've tossed it!
