Is it possible to tack stitch the new braid atop the original braid? I would try basting with a thread color that matches the new braid. The only other thing I can think of is to use ResQTape. It's a double-sided adhesive made for fabric. You should be able to find it in a craft/sewing store.

Temporary adhesive won't hold well and any other may hold too well and you won't be able to take it off or cause some damage. I'd be leery of using double-sided for that reason. I think hand stitching is probably the best way. If you don't sew, maybe you can find someone.
